Aims/hypothesis This study examined the relationship, if any, between glucose-induced oxidative stress, antioxidant status and microalbuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods The study involved 99 consecutive type 2 diabetic patients (57 men, 42 women). Patients with persistent microalbuminuria were identified and the following variables evaluated: fasting plasma glucose, HbA 1c , malonyldialdehyde (MDA), pentosidine, AGE, the total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP), vitamin E, creatinine, estimated GFR and lipid profile. Results Patients were divided into two groups, i.e. 37 individuals without microalbuminuria (AER <20 μg/min) and 62 with microalbuminuria (AER ≥20 μg/min). The following variables were significantly higher in patients with microalbuminuria than in those without microalbuminuria (mean ± SD): fasting plasma glucose 9.41±2.88 vs 8.19±1.93 mmol/l, p<0.05; HbA 1c 7.97±1.51 vs 7.39± 1.03%, p<0.05; MDA 1.18±0.35 vs 1.02±0.29 µmol/l, p< 0.05; pentosidine 98.5±24.6 vs 82.9±20.9 pmol/ml, p< 0.005; and AGE 13.2±4.8 vs 10.6±3.8 µg/mg protein, p< 0.01. However, vitamin E and TRAP did not differ between the two groups. Serum creatinine values and estimated GFR were similar in the two groups. Only in patients with microalbuminuria were significant linear correlations seen between AER and both oxidation (HbA 1c r=0.33, p<0.01; MDA r=0.59, p<0.001; pentosidine r=0.48, p<0.001; and AGE r=0.44, p<0.001) and antioxidation variables (vitamin E r=−0.55, p<0.001; TRAP r=−0.49, p<0.001). Considering all variables together, multiple regression revealed a correlation between microalbuminuria and vitamin E, TRAP, HbA 1c and MDA, but not pentosidine or AGE. Conclusions/interpretation Our data suggest that microalbuminuria in type 2 diabetic patients might be promoted by an insufficient counter-regulation of the antioxidant system in the event of increased glyco-oxidation/glycation.

Flavonoids have been widely incorporated into cosmetic and dermatological formulations, affording benefits such as antioxidant action, improved skin tone and fewer lines and wrinkles. Brazil has a huge biodiversity, with one of the richest flora in the world, and existing studies justify the quest for greater research efforts in this area. The cajazeira (Spondias lutea L.), a plant of the Anacardiaceae family from tropical America, is widely disseminated in Brazil. This plant was chosen because of the presence of flavonoids that exhibit antioxidant activity. The purpose of this research was to develop a stable topical formulation containing Spondias lutea extract with the aim of preventing skin diseases caused by UV radiation. Hydro ethanolic extract of Spondias lutea fruit was prepared and assayed for its the flavonoids content. The antioxidant activity was estimated by DPPH and superoxide assay. The physicochemical stability and skin permeation of the cream containing 8% (w/w) of extract were assessed. The results showed that the S. lutea extract possessed antioxidant activity, and that it is possible to obtain a stable cosmetic containing the extract, which is able to penetrate the skin. Thus, it is possible to use this extract to produce an anti-aging cosmetic.

Background/Objectives: Antioxidant-rich foods may favorably influence lung function. We examined possible associations between the total dietary antioxidant capacity (TAC) and pulmonary function in a healthy Italian population. Subjects/Methods: Until May 2009, 22 300 persons were randomly recruited from the general population in the Moli-sani project. A sample only including healthy women (5824) and men (5848) was analyzed. TAC was measured in foods by three different assays and the ferric reducing-antioxidant power (FRAP) assay was selected as the better indicator of dietary TAC. The European Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Food Frequency Questionnaire was used for dietary assessment. The association between quintiles of dietary FRAP and pulmonary indexes was assessed using analysis of variance separately for men and women. Results: After adjustment for confounders, women in the highest quintile of FRAP intake had þ 39 ml forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV 1 ) and þ 54 ml forced vital capacity, compared with those in the lowest quintile (P for trend p0.006). Stratified analysis showed that this relationship only occurred in women who were premenopausal/never smokers. In this subgroup, the observed effect of higher FRAP intake on FEV 1 was equivalent to an improvement in pulmonary age of 3.3 years. In men, all significant associations between pulmonary function and TAC were lost after adjustment for confounding. Conclusions: Dietary TAC may have a favorable role in respiratory health, particularly in premenopausal/never smoker women.
