Rapidly growing research in the field of Unnamed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has redrawn the application map for UAVs that now incorporates personal to public side applications apart from having just military domain within its boundary. Despite numerous practical advantages, UAVs systems are not utilized up to their full potential owing to the characteristics of higher mobility and limited lifetime of on-board batteries. In multi-hop real-time systems, abrupt movement or early depletion of energy resources for some overloaded UAVs may result in the creation of a network hole or even in a breakdown of the whole network. In this article, a new Life-Enhancing recovery Approach for a Multi-UAVs (LEAMU) network is proposed that not only provides a routing solution but also serves as a fail-safe method. The crux of the LEAMU is the identification of the best recovering UAV since the selection of an unhealthy UAV will result in more recovery requests afterward. In LEAMU, network hole creation is avoided beforehand through a distributed election of a suitable candidate keeping distance, remaining energy, neighborhood density, and traffic load factors into consideration. The proposed strategy is simulated and has shown to have a promising future for its integration into the existing UAV systems.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained popularity for diverse applications and services in both the military and civilian domains. For cooperation and collaboration among UAVs, they can be wirelessly interconnected in an ad hoc manner, resulting in a UAV network. UAV networks have unique features and characteristics that are different from mobile ad hoc networks and vehicular ad hoc networks. The dynamic behavior of rapid mobility and topology changes in UAV networks makes the design of a routing protocol quite challenging. In this paper, we review the routing protocols for UAV networks, in which the topology-based, position-based, hierarchical, deterministic, stochastic, and social-network-based routing protocols are extensively surveyed. The routing protocols are then compared qualitatively in terms of their major features, characteristics, and performance. Biology is a rich source of inspiration in designing digital artifacts capable of autonomous, cooperative and distributed behaviors. Particularly, conceptual links can be established between (1) communication networks and (2) colonies of bacteria that communicate using chemical molecules. The goal of this paper is to propose a computational multiagent model of an interspecies bacterial communication system, termed quorum sensing, and analyze its self-sustainability and its self-maintaining ability to cooperatively form artificial wireless networks. Specifically, we propose a bottom-up agent-based approach combined with Ordinary Differential Equations, which abstract the intracellular dynamics, such as a proposed metabolism model that serves as a basis underlying self-sustainable networks. Results show that artificial bacterial cells have regeneration abilities in the light of random cell death and selected area for cell death, and a metabolism allowing them to exploit their own produced energy to cooperate at the population level to exhibit near-optimal self-organizing light-producing behaviors. The resulting artificial networks display several beneficial properties and could be used for the emergence of resistant wireless network topologies without the use of overhead messages.
