This study evaluates integrative lotic ecosystem health using neural network modeling and principal component analysis of physical, chemical, and biological parameters in 33 streams and rivers of a large watershed. Water chemistry parameters were measured to detect chemical health, and physical habitat health was determined by a model of qualitative habitat evaluation index (QHEI). Also, biological health was determined by the multi-metric community fish model of index of biological integrity (IBI) and then analyzed trophic compositions and tolerance guilds. In addition, we analyzed fish tissues of liver, kidney, gill, vertebra, and muscle using a sentinel species of Zacco platypus. Chemical pollutions were closely associated with land-use patterns within the watershed and the locations of major point-sources. Model value of QHEI as a measure of physical habitat health averaged 144, indicating good health, and varied from 96 to 190 depending on the sampling sites. The proportion of sensitive fish species in the tolerance guilds had negative correlation with organic matter pollution (r = -0.716, p<0.001) and had positive a relationship with IBI (r = 0.683, p<0.001) and QHEI (r = 0.573, p = 0.001). The proportion of insectivore species, as a trophic composition indicator, was inversely correlated with BOD (r = -0.463, p = 0.007) and positive with IBI (r = 0.679, p<0.001). The analysis of the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) 14-5-1 model, based on the predicted IBI values in the training sites (R 2 = 0.999, MSE = 0.015) and testing sites (R 2 = 0.894, MSE = 27.4) showed high efficiency in the MLP model.

1. Prairie streams are dynamic systems in which habitat patches are sporadically created and lost during extreme hydrological events. The persistence of fish species depends on life-history traits that facilitate their widespread dispersal to recolonize habitats after stochastic extirpation. Artificial barriers are thought to reduce recolonization opportunities and to ultimately displace populations downstream, but the ecological consequences of lost diversity above the barriers are largely unknown.2. The susceptibility of four prairie fishes to fragmentation and the consequent risk to stream ecosystem processes are described. The selected species exhibit wide tolerances to environmental stressors, represent unique functional feeding guilds, and have different habitat affinities.3. The ability of each species to access (jumping ability) and successfully traverse (swimming endurance) simulated instream barriers was quantified in the laboratory.Experimental stream complexes were used to isolate the effects of these species on ecosystem structure and function. These replicated single-species experiments were compared with 'no fish' controls to identify the ecological role of each. Small vertical barriers blocked most passage, and with open access all species wereunable to traverse relatively short distances against modest water velocities.Stream fragmentation will alter headwater fish assemblage structure and promote the most mobile species. Each species had slightly different effects on the stream ecosystem structure resulting from their different habitat preferences and diets. 5. Without colonization opportunities from neighbouring populations, disturbance events will alter headwater fish assemblages and may degrade the ecosystem structure above barriers.6. Fragmented riverscapes interact with harsh disturbance regimes to form an ecological ratchet. Systematic species loss above barriers outweighs the opportunity for improvement, suggesting that ecosystem structure may be moving downstream.

Para avaliar a integridade ambiental de um ambiente deve-se considerar a composição de espécies, pois estas podem mostrar o histórico de perturbações em escala temporal. O grupo dos peixes pode mostrar a qualidade e integridade dos ecossistemas aquáticos, tais como lagoas marginais que são estressados anualmente por pulsos de inundações e podem ser afetados de acordo com o uso do solo em seu entorno. Desta forma, conhecer espécies que podem mostrar o histórico ambiental é de grande valor para entender estes ecossistemas. O objetivo deste trabalho é encontrar espécies que sejam relacionadas a determinados tipos de ocupação do solo. Dados de composição e uso do solo foram avaliados através de análises multivariadas para compreender estas relações. Concluindo que herbívoros são relacionados a determinadas classes como lavouras, campos e matas.
