Abstract: BackgroundProgress testing (PT) is used in Western countries to evaluate students’ level of functional knowledge, and to enhance meaning-oriented and self-directed learning. However, the use of PT has not been investigated in East Asia, where reproduction-oriented and teacher-centered learning styles prevail. “…Accordingly, they have fewer chances to train their clinical knowledge and skills under systematic instructional programs between PGY 3 and 9. While JMU graduates are supposed to improve medical knowledge and skills in a selfdirected manner, JMU undergraduates are not sufficiently ready with SRL for postgraduate settings [10,11,20]. Therefore, the university educational board introduced a new program aimed at independent learning at Year 6 [11], and now the attempt has been expanding across school years.…”

“…From this perspective, studies show the students' perception about the PT is that it is a useful test, which enables an evaluation of memorization and repetition, leading to better learning, guided by feedback. (11,12) The PBL teaching methodology, however, is not restricted to memorization, as it provides the freedom for students to pursue their own learning, focusing on personal and individual choices and needs for study and learning. (12)(13)(14) Students are encouraged to study the main contents of each module that make up the curriculum, facilitating the acquisition and the retention of knowledge in the long term.…”
