A Family of Multiaddressable, Multicolored Photoresponsive Copolymers Prepared by Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Abstract: A series of homo-and copolymers containing different photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) architectures was prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) techniques. Each DTE structure can be uniquely addressed in the two-and three-component copolymers, providing a means to generate a wide range of colors when the compounds are selectively photocyclized to their ring-closed forms. Multicomponent, multiaddressable materials of this type are beneficial for applications such as multistate photochromic r… Show more

“…One example is reported by N. Branda, [205] where three dithienylethene (DTE) derivatives providing the three primary colors are covalently linked to norbonene-based water-soluble monomers. Thus, a new family of multiaddressable photoresponsive copolymers is prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP).…”

“…Wigglesworth and Branda have designed a series of copolymers (see Fig. 6.9), via ring-opening metathesis (ROMP) chemistry, whose colors were determined through appropriate blending of three diarylethene derivatives [31], which have potential application in the area of multibit optical storage.…”
