A facile strategy to fabricate large-scale uniform brookite TiO2 nanospindles with high thermal stability and superior electrical properties

Abstract: A facile strategy was initiated to fabricate large-scale uniform brookite TiO2 nanospindles preferentially grown along the [001] direction, which were highly thermally stable and exhibited superior electrical conductivity, about two orders of magnitude higher than those of anatase and rutile counterparts.

“…35 Zhao et al also found that the initially formed precursor of [Ti(OH) 4 (OH 2 ) 2 ] from the starting material TiOSO 4 in water could be easily transformed into the anatase phase, but the production of the brookite phase rather than other crystalline titania phases was favoured in the presence of highly con- centrated OH − . 36 Based on the above previous reports, we proposed that the titanium glycolate precursor could initially steadily convert into the building unit monomers of TiO 2 in the hydrothermal reaction system. Once the concentration of monomers reaches super-saturation, fast nucleation would occur, and a lot of crystal seeds would start to come out during the reaction period.…”

“…Most of the surface is made by {010}, {111}, {210} and reconstructed {001} [72][73][74] or hydrothermal methods [73,75,76]. Brookite nanosheets [77] or pseudocubic nanocrystals [78] can be prepared adapting the synthetic conditions.…”

“…Usually, the active {0 0 1} facets are easier to be exposed on two-dimensional nanosheets than on other morphologies [8,9]. Zhao et al [10] had fabricated anatase TiO 2 nanospindles which are featured by large exposed {0 0 1} facets and found they provided a good solution to the problems of poor electron transport and severe aggregation of TiO 2 nanoparticles.…”
