A Facile One‐Pot Synthesis of 1,2,3,4‐Tetrahydroisoquinoline‐1‐carbonitriles via the Electrogenerated Cyanide Anions from Acetonitrile

Abstract: The electrosynthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-1-carbonitriles by acetonitrile reduction is a green and safe strategy to replace the traditional cyanation. Herein, we have obtained the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-1-carbonitrile in good yields by a simple reaction between dihydroisoquinolin-2-ium iodide and the electrogenerated acetonitrile formed under low temperature conditions, when a solution of dry acetonitrile is electrolyzed at a Carbon rod as cathode and a magnesium plate as anode in undivide… Show more

“…1 In the years to come, there shall be a growing interest in the utilization of organic electrochemical synthesis as a versatile and potent approach for constructing heterocyclic structures. [2][3][4][5] This method has demonstrated superior efficiency and selectivity compared to traditional synthetic methods. Moreover, it is worth to notice that the green methodologies involved in the electrosynthesis complies with nine out of the 12 principles of green chemistry, as depicted in Fig.…”

“…The major objective of scientists has been concentrated on the creation of environmentally friendly and long-term technologies without introducing noxious materials in regard to growth with economic and environmental restrictions . Therefore, in recent years, organic electrochemical synthesis appears to be a flexible and powerful method for assembling heterocyclic structures because it is more efficient and selective than the conventional synthetic methods, and more importantly the electrosynthesis correlates with nine of the 12 postulates of green chemistry (Figure ). Agrochemicals, organic substances, medicines, and physiologically active natural items contain various heterocyclic structures, and crucially, at least one heterocyclic ring is present in greater than 70% of all pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals .…”
