A dynamical stabilization of the radion potential

Abstract: Large extra dimensional theories attempt to solve the hierarchy problem by assuming that the fundamental scale of the theory is at the electroweak scale. This requires the size of the extra dimensions to be stabilized at a scale which is determined by the effective four dimensional Planck mass and the number of extra dimensions. In this paper we concentrate upon the dynamical reasons to stabilize them by providing a running mass to the radion field. We show that it is possible to maintain the size of the extra… Show more

“…One of the most promising candidates for resolving this is the introduction of a large extra dimension and reducing the scale of quantum gravity all way down to the weak scale, which was shown first by Arkani-Hamed et al [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. This possibility might imply the existence of large extra dimensions and this opens up a new cosmological scenario for the early universe [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Though it is an interesting concept, the existence of a large hierarchy between the weak and the Planck scale leads to new hierarchy through the length scale of the large extra dimension where the radius of the extra dimension is much larger than the natural value.…”

“…If the three spatial dimensions are expanding with a Hubble parameter H, then it has been observed in Ref. [13] that the common mode actually gets a running mass of order ∼ O(H). Once this happens, the common mode decouples from the rest of the tachyon dynamics, and settles down to the minimum of its potential.…”

“…As soon as extra dimensions are introduced, the question of their compactification and stabilization becomes important and should be addressed [32][33][34][35]. It would therefore be of interest to study model theories where such issues are addressed and possible solutions presented.…”
