A Double Stomach in an Adult

Abstract: Gastric duplication cysts are uncommon congenital anomalies and are rarely diagnosed in adults. We present a unique case of a communicating type gastric duplication in a young woman with the multimodality imaging findings including barium examination, CT, and endoscopy. The morphological criteria for diagnosis of duplication cyst suggested pathogenetic mechanisms for its formation as well as clinical presentation. Associated pathologies are reviewed.

“…Larger cysts can cause abdominal pain and discomfort; larger tension may cause stomach mucosa bleeding and vomiting; and those located in the cardia or pylorus may present with obstruction. Patients with gastric duplications were usually diagnosed because of abdominal pain, vomiting and abdominal swelling before 2 years old [2], while some cases were found in adulthood [3, 4]. Diagnostic work-up includes x-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI.…”

“…Gastric duplication cysts are a rare phenomenon among gastric tumours [1] and only account for 2% to 7% of all gastrointestinal duplications [6]. Because of their topographic location and repressive clinical character, diagnosis is usually made in early childhood.…”

“…Cystic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract are a congenital anomaly, comprising 4% of all alimentary tract duplications; they can present with a wide range of clinical symptoms [1]. Adults suffering from gastric duplication cysts are rare; commonly, gastric cysts are discovered in early childhood because of abdominal pain or gastric outlet obstruction [2].…”
