A disconnect between staff and student perceptions of learning: an ACELL educational analysis of the first year undergraduate chemistry experiment ‘investigating sugar using a home made polarimeter’

Abstract: This paper describes an educational analysis of a first year university chemistry practical called 'Investigating sugar using a home made polarimeter'. The analysis follows the formalism of the Advancing Chemistry by Enhancing Learning in the Laboratory (ACELL) project, which includes a statement of education objectives, and an analysis of the student learning experience. The practical requires students to accurately prepare solutions of known concentrations of a common consumer chemical (sucrose), and then in… Show more

“…Mean values of response scores received from each student cohort, from each year, for each experiment, for each Likert-type response format item on the surveys were calculated for the purposes of comparison (labeled as m 2011 and, m 2012 for mean values from 2011 and 2012 data, respectively). This is in line with both standard methodology of the ASELL project ,,, and recommendations from statistics literature . Mean scored responses to the Likert-type response format items were compared between years for each of the three experiments using the t test for unequal variances, , using this test in preference to the equal variances test in all cases as recommended in the statistics literature for data sets of unequal sample size. , The value of alpha (α) was selected to be 0.05 for the purposes of statistical testing, and two tailed probability values were obtained for all comparisons made.…”

“…45 Most students were highly motivated to construct their own apparatus and put a lot of effort in order to get the best possible results. 23,65 In several instances, students showed a strong interest in conducting their own at-home experiments 38,41,45,53,63 and developed creative solutions in different practical issues. 45 Furthermore, students showed confidence and ability, as they spontaneously shared their instruments in The article can also be implemented to the microfluids topic.…”
