The possibility of conducting laboratory experiments at home without using commercially available kits, which might also be overly expensive, seems to be a suitable approach for a distance chemistry laboratory. Thus, several hands-on experiments with household supplies have been developed aiming at fostering students' laboratory competencies, as in a face-to-face chemistry laboratory course. This paper presents a scoping review mapping this type of experiments and identifying their characteristics to guide chemistry educators in using them with a more effective manner. The review includes the publications that have appeared as full-length articles in scientific journals during the period 1992−2021.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
