A digital reconstruction of the sunken “Villa con ingresso a protiro” in the underwater archaeological site of Baiae

Abstract: Abstract. The Underwater Cultural Heritage represents a key aspect of our historical memory still little known due to a number of limitations imposed by the underwater environment. The aim of this paper is to explore the use of digital three-dimensional reconstructions to support the research about this immeasurable archaeological and historical resource. The whole virtual reconstruction process is described step by step, focusing on the iterative feedback allowing for reaching the best virtual reconstruction … Show more

“…In the dry 3D environment, the user interaction occurs in the same way as described for the underwater scenario, the only difference is that the user cannot move as in the water. The 3D hypothetical reconstruction has been carried out through a theoretical and multidisciplinary scientific approach [ 49 ] on the basis of archaeological evidence and, for the parts that did not survive to the present, proposed reconstructions are based on the coeval examples known from the literature.…”

“…The methodology described in [12] has been used for the creation of the digital reconstruction of the Villa dei Pisoni. The very first step of a hypothetical 3D reconstruction process is collecting and studying the sources.…”

“…About the 3D hypothetical reconstruction, this has been achieved by means of a theoretical and multidisciplinary scientific approach [Davidde Petriaggi et al, 2018], under the direction of Barbara Davidde Petriaggi, that exploits the high-resolution 3D data together with drawings and other historical and archaeological information to build a suggestive and consistent digital reconstruction of the underwater architectures not anymore existing. In particular, the reconstruction process starts with gathering historical documentation, scientific literature and geometric data (archaeological maps, illustrations, photos, Digital Terrain Model, etc.).…”
