Centralized wastewater management system is the modern day waste management practice, but the high cost and stringent requirements for the construction and operation have made it less attractive in the under-resourced regions of the world. Considering these challenges, the use of decentralized wastewater management system, on-site treatment system, as an appropriate technology for domestic wastewater treatment is hereby advocated. Adopting this technology helps save money, protects home owners' investment, promotes better watershed management, offers an appropriate solution for low-density communities, provides suitable alternatives for varying site conditions and furnishes effective solutions for ecologically sensitive areas. In the light of this, an overview of the on-site treatment scheme, at the laboratory scale, pilot study stage, and field trials was conducted to highlight the operational principles' strength and shortcomings of the scheme. The operational requirements for the establishing and operation of the scheme and best management practice to enhance the performance and sustenance were proffered.

Nitrosomonas europaea is the most extensively studied ammonia-oxidizing bacterium (AOB), being a ubiquitous player in the conversion of ammonia in the soil environment. The precipitation of constituents of the standard culture medium, American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) #2265, further hinders both the study of N. europaea vital role in the nitrogen cycle and the development of biotechnological applications, as the presence of inorganic debris severely compromises scale-up procedures and downstream processing. The standard formulation was analyzed; the precipitate was identified as being struvite. Struvite is spontaneously formed when magnesium, phosphate, and ammonium are available in a high pH solution. This combination is common and transversal to a series of AOB media formulations. Therefore, a non-precipitating medium was developed. The modified medium does not require filter sterilization, which reduces 99% of its production cost. The kinetic performance of N. europaea was evaluated in the standard and modified medium. A precise and direct quantification of the bacterium cell growth profile was achieved using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and flow cytometry, which was correlated with other metabolic parameters. The performance of N. europaea was not impaired in the modified medium.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of source separated urine allows for a more sustainable approach to nutrients recovery in actual wastewater treatment plants. Struvite precipitation from urine yields a slow-release fertilizer (struvite) with a high marketable value for agricultural use. Extensive research on struvite precipitation has been carried out at laboratory scale, but there is still a lack of specific knowledge about the operation and key parameters at larger scale and over the long term. The effectiveness of the struvite reactor was assessed, as well as the quality of the harvested struvite in terms of size and composition. RESULTS: The efficiency of recovery of P was maintained at 85-99% for 1 year of continuous operation. Phosphorus was recovered in the form of struvite with purity over 90%. Struvite was harvested as round pellets between 0.3 and 6 mm in diameter, with heavy metals concentration well below the legal limits for fertilizers in The Netherlands. The post-treatment of the reactor effluent yielded almost complete removal (>95%) of calcium and magnesium. A loss of 26 ± 5% of the influent chemical oxygen demand and 16 ± 1% of the NH 4 + -N occurred during the magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) precipitation and the post-treatment. CONCLUSION: This work shows how the treatment of source-separated urine by struvite precipitation in a fluidized bed reactor allows for efficient recovery of phosphorus in the form of a potential fertilizer.
