ABSTRACT:This paper presents an integrated approach between digital documentation workflows and historical research in order to document log houses, outstanding example of vernacular architecture in Quebec, focusing on their geometrical-dimensional as well as on the intangible elements associated with these historical structures. The 18 log houses selected in the Laurentians represent the material culture of how settlers adapted to the harsh Quebec environment at the end of the nineteenth century. The essay describes some results coming by professor Mariana Esponda in 2015 (Carleton University) and the digital documentation was carried out through the grant New Paradigm/New Tools for Architectural Heritage in Canada, supported by SSHRC Training Program) (May-August 2016). The workflow of the research started with the digital documentation, accomplished with laser scanning techniques, followed by onsite observations, and archival researches. This led to the creation of an 'abacus', a first step into the development of a territorialhistorical database of the log houses, potentially updatable by other researchers. Another important part of the documentation of these buildings has been the development of Historic Building Information Models fundamental to analyze the geometry of the logs and to understand how these constructions were built. The realization of HBIMs was a first step into the modeling of irregular shapes such as those of the logs -different Level of Detail were adopted in order to show how the models can be used for different purposes. In the future, they can potentially be used for the creation of a virtual tour app for the story telling of these buildings.

The growing need to recover and digitally represent heritage infrastructure has led to the challenge of choosing different Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms that will be used to manage the implementation of the semi-automatic design and reconstruction processes of reverse engineering modeling. The approach to the integrated management of information derived through Heritage-BIM (H-BIM) has been applied to Via del Duomo, one of the main roads in the old town of Naples, Italy. During preliminary inspections of the construction site it was possible to acquire geometric features and pavement/subgrade information, as well as to conduct a photographic survey, with 1,618 photographs collected. Subsequently, the acquired data were processed, using different BIM-based tools, to obtain the 3D mesh; objects were then converted from pure graphic solids into parametric entities by proposing a specific algorithm. Then a library, with the inclusion of all the possible stone paving package alternatives, including all the structural and stress-deforming characteristics such as Young Modulus (E), Poisson coefficient (n), and Safety factor (SF), was created. In this way, it is possible to associate to the generic element the optimal pavement package solution, depending on different construction contexts. As preliminary result, a dynamic model that updates its information package and modifies the output of the analysis every time the data worksheet is integrated with new collected results is proposed for further pavement management operations evaluation.

In rural and marginal landscapes, the architectural heritage carries an inestimable value. It distinguishes these places from the standardization of contemporary society and it makes them authentic and rooted in the territory. Investigating the real potential of building heritage and understanding what actions should be taken to raise it to the needs of contemporary society is one way to preserve this authenticity. The article presents an innovative multidisciplinary tool, based on GIS methodology, for rapid evaluation of the features of traditional rural architecture. With it, it is possible to carry out a complex analysis, by considering architectural, energy and structural items. It can also guide the design activities in order to optimize the revitalization actions, emphasizing the holistic approach. The potentiality of this procedure will be shown for a test site, namely, the Isle of Filicudi (Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy).
