A cutoff time scaling of 1/f noise in a sandpile

Abstract: We show that for fluctuations in a sandpile with $1/f^{\alpha}$ spectrum, the power may also exhibit a scaling with its cutoff time. Despite significant progress, this generic behaviour remains so far overlooked and poorly understood. An intriguing example is the power spectrum of a simple random walk (normal diffusive process) on a ring with $L$ sites, showing $L/f^{3/2}$ behaviour instead of $1/f^2$ (Brownian noise) in the frequency regime $1/L^2 \ll f \ll 1/2$. We address the intriguing problem by scali… Show more

“…Informally, 1/f p noise is to white noise what anomalous diffusion is to regular diffusion. The scientific literature on 1/f p noise is vast [126][127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134][135][136][137][138], and recent studies on 1/f p noise include [139][140][141][142][143][144].…”

“…As with anomalous diffusion: experimental evidence of 1/f noises started to appear in the nineteen-seventies [158][159][160]; 1/f noises are widely observed across the sciences [161]; the research of 1/f noises is vast and profound [162][163][164][165][166][167][168][169][170]; and, to date, the research of 1/f noises is bustling with activity [171][172][173][174][175][176] 8 . Also, there is a considerable scientific interest in the intersection of anomalous diffusion and 1/f noises, e.g.…”
