A Curious Case of Plasma Cell Gingivitis

Abstract: Abstract:Dense infiltration of plasma cells in the gingiva may be an isolated granuloma or diffusely involve the gingiva caused due to a variety of edible allergens. Prerequisite diagnosis of plasma cell gingivitis is important in order to differentiate it from other analogous malignancies. Here we have documented a case of plasma cell gingivitis due to the indiscriminate use of an herbal product. A 26 year old male presented with enlarged and edematous gingiva. “…[ 24 25 ] Radiographic finding of generalized horizontal bone loss was seen in a single case as mentioned in the literature. [ 15 ] Silverman has described syndromic association with the triad of PCG, glossitis, and cheilitis but no case in our series showed this association. [ 26 ] Three cases in the literature were associated with supraglottic lesions but none of our present cases showed laryngeal lesions.…”

“…Plasma cell gingivitis is a rare benign condition of the gingiva characterized by sharply demarcated erythematous and edematous gingivitis often extending to the mucogingival junction [1] . Other terminologies previously used for this unusual type of conditioned enlargement were atypical gingivitis, allergic gingivitis, plasmacytosis of the gingiva, plasma cell gingivostomatitis and idiopathic gingivostomatitis [2] . Plasma cell gingivitis is considered a hypersensitive reaction to some antigen, often to chewing gum, toothpaste, and other foreign substances.…”
