A Critical Analysis of the Water Quality Impacts on Water Resources in the Athi River Drainage Basin, Kenya

Abstract: This paper presents a critical analysis of the water quality changes and their impacts on water resources within the Athi River Catchment and its implications of the people’s livelihoods. The paper analyses the effects of land use activities on water quality in the headwater areas of the basin which has a profound impacts on the downstream water uses within the basin. The paper in addition makes an attempt to relate the impacts of human activities on water quality degradation trends within the basin against th… Show more

“…Copper is essential for the human body, but high intake can cause adverse health problems like headaches, s tomachaches, dizziness, vomiting and diarrhea [29]. In Figure 4, the copper content of samples of groundnut oil from all the markets was below the threshold limit; this may probably be a result of low indus trial activity in the area, low contamination of the soil in which the groundnut seed used in the production of the oil were cultivated [30]. The highes t and lowes t values from the research were 0.110 and 0.011 mg kg -1 , respectively.…”

“…The area is considered semi-arid and dependent on erratic rainfall patterns that fall within the two rainy seasons. With an annual per capita renewable water resource of 464 m 3 , Athi River has less water than the 1000 m 3 per capita global benchmark [31]. Wundanyi has a single river (Wundanyi/Voi River) and many small stream tributaries.…”

“…To measure the suspended load at the sampling 30 points along the river channel, clean plastic bottles were used because we could not lay our hands on the initial proposed US DH-48 depth-integrating suspended-sediment sampler. This method is previously employed by [14] [15], in their study of temporal changes of sediment dynamics in river sub-basins. Sediment sampling was done for the wet season only.…”
