What Factors Affect the Level of Green Urbanization in the Yellow River Basin in the Context of New-Type Urbanization?

Promoting new-type urbanization with the concept of green development has become an inevitable requirement for high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. Grasping the development trend and influencing factors of green urbanization level in the Yellow River Basin is of great significance for implementing the international conventions on environmental protection and participating in global environmental governance. This paper selects the green urbanization level panel data of nine provinces in the Yellow River Basin from 2006 to 2018. Then, principal component analysis and factor analysis are applied to measure and evaluate the green urbanization level of each province. Furthermore, this paper constructs a dynamic panel estimation model and uses differential generalized method of moments (DIF-GMM) model and system generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) model to explore the influencing factors. The results show that the overall level of green urbanization in the Yellow River Basin has steadily and rapidly increased, and there are significant spatial differences. The green urbanization level of eastern provinces is significantly higher than that of central and western provinces. In addition, the overall level of green urbanization shows a convergence trend. From the perspective of influencing factors, the factors that have significant positive effects on the level of green urbanization include economic development level, technological innovation level, and urban size. Industrial structure, foreign direct investment (FDI), and education level counteract the level of green urbanization. However, environmental regulation strength and opening degree fail to pass the significance test. Therefore, it is necessary to promote and upgrade industrial transformation, improve the quality of opening up, and strengthen cooperation in technological innovation and environmental governance. There are requirements that the government control the urban size and population scientifically and implement the environmental access system strictly in order to improve the level of green urbanization in the Yellow River Basin. It is more possible to achieve harmonious economic and ecological environment development.

This research outlines the estimation of comprehensive urban development intensity (CDI) and comprehensive eco-environment stresses (CES) along with a comparative evaluation of CDI and CES in the form of a coupling degree (CD) model. A statistical analysis of twelve Indian cities was considered to gather data, which would help generalize the correlation between urban density and environmental stress. The Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) identifies land urbanization ratio (LUR), i.e., percentage of impervious area concerning entire area and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) (CODI) discharge per unit area as the principal sub-indices representing CDI and CES respectively for further analysis. In the year 2017, r-value of 0.872 was estimated between CDI and CES using Karl Pearson coefficient of correlation methodology. It was also observed, except Guwahati and Surat, all other cities were loaded with the highest level of urbanization with an immediate effect on proportional intensifying environmental stress. The CD classifications of cities showed most of the cities were designated as high (H) class of urbanization. This research's output showed the environmental status of each city with its growing urbanization and demanded to interrupt the trend of environmental degradation. Such kind of classification of CDI, CES and CD will be beneficial for researchers and urban planners in dealing with cities that will be dwelling as metropolitan territories in days to come.

Rapid urbanization is being increasingly recognized as a significant factor of environmental pollution across the world. However, the significance of sustainable urbanization in controlling both pollution and population remains either limited in scope, in the case of developed countries, or less researched, in the case of developing nations. To fill this gap, the present study employed both theoretical and empirical tools to investigate the significant link between sustainable urbanization, pollution and non-agricultural output. In order to empirically examine the supposed link among the key variables mentioned above, the present study considered a panel of the world’s top 20 polluting countries for the 1991–2018 period, which significantly includes both developed and developing nations. Panel vector error correction model and panel co-integration techniques were employed to derive the possible correlation between the variables through sustainable urbanization. Empirical findings show an absence of equilibrium relations among the three variables in the panel of developed countries. However, the study clearly finds that all the three indicators maintain long-run associations for the panel of developing countries. Furthermore, in the short run, the results determine unambiguously that there are significant causal interplays between any two sets of variables and the remaining one variable for both the panel data of developed and developing countries. On the other hand, short-run interplays among the variables we considered exist for both developed and developing economies. From the perspective of policy formulation, the present study shows that policy makers from both the developed and developing nations should be cautious before encouraging urbanization, at least in the short term. However, the combined effects in the short and long term suggest policy makers should be more careful before encouraging urbanization in developing economies.
