A Controlled Trial of Single Dose lntravesical Adriamycin in Superficial Bladder Tumours

Abstract: Sixty patients with recurrent superficial bladder tumours (Ta or T1) entered an open controlled trial of single dose Adriamycin. After transurethral resection of tumor recurrences, patients were alternately allocated to the control group or to the Adriamycin group, who received an instillation of 50 mg of Adriamycin in 50 ml of saline for 30 min. Six months later all patients were readmitted for endoscopy. In the Adriamycin group significantly more patients showed a decrease in the number of recurrent papillom… Show more

“…A tumor-related death occurred in the group with short-term instillation therapy in 13.2% and in the group with long-term instillation therapy in 12.9 % (table 4). tion regimens, and the results of prospective randomized studies are well documented [1,15,21], The percentage of recurrences varies between 22% and 75% [20]. In our study the percentage of recurrences was 42.1 % for the short-term instillation and 47.1 % in the group with long term instillation.…”

“…either doxorubicin or mitomycin [12][13][14][15], Finally, evi dence to document a correlation between the intensity of treatment and its adjuvant efficacy is lacking [11,12]. The long-term objective of our study is to compare the adjuvant results and the feasibility of a relatively mild regimen of doxorubicin to those of a substantially more intensive treatment with mitomycin.…”

“…Popeert et al [5] noted that a single instillation of epirubicin (SIE) into the bladder had a significant effect on marker lesions with acceptable toxicity. A number of randomized studies have shown that a single instillation of a cytotoxic drug, mainly epirubicin or mitomycin, decreases the number of subsequent recurrences [6-8]. …”
