PurposeBoundary decision is an important but underexplored theme in digital platform research. The boundary decision of digital platform enterprises (DPEs) differs from traditional organizations because of cross-side network effects (CNEs). This study intends to investigate whether transaction cost economics (TCE) and resource-based view (RBV), as classical organization boundary mechanisms, are still applicable for DPEs.Design/methodology/approachTo unfold the research problem, this study conducts a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on the samples of 21 platform business units.FindingsThe results show that the classical boundary decision theory still applies in the context of DPEs, but the cross-side network effects will affect boundary decision of DPEs.Originality/valueThis study provides a new framework – integrates TCE, RBV and CNEs – to analyze boundary decision of DPEs. This paper also contributes to research on both organization boundary decision and platform governance.

Ex-ante reminders: The effect of messaging strategies on reducing non-sustainable consumption behaviors in access-based services

Users’ non-sustainable consumption behaviors are affecting the sustainability of access-based services (ABSs), but ABS firms can utilize messaging strategies (ex-ante reminders) to persuade users to curtail their non-sustainable consumption behaviors. Through two online scenario-based experiments in China, this study determined that: (1) Compared with rational appeal messaging, emotional appeal messaging is better able to persuade consumers to curtail non-sustainable consumption behaviors. Furthermore, loss-framed messages are more effective than gain-framed ones. (2) Message appeal and message framing have an interactive persuasive effect on reducing such consumer behaviors. Loss-framed rational appeal messages are more persuasive at reducing non-sustainable consumption behaviors than gain-framed rational appeal messages, and gain-framed emotional appeal messages persuade consumers to reduce non-sustainable consumption behaviors more than loss-framed ones. (3) Consumers’ psychological ownership moderates the persuasive effect of messaging. Among consumers with a high level of psychological ownership of shared goods, only gain-framed emotional appeal messaging is effective at reducing non-sustainable consumption behaviors, whereas among consumers with low psychological ownership, the persuasive effect of loss-framed rational appeal messaging is more effective than gain-framed emotional appeal messaging. This study extends the research on non-sustainable consumption behavior management in ABSs and provides important inspiration for the management of ABSs consumer behavior.

The Total Factor Productivity of China’s Software Industry and its Promotion Path

To reasonably guide and promote the high-quality development of China's software industry through policies, and to improve the total factor productivity (TFP) of China's software industry are the inevitable requirements of the conjunctive development. Previous research mainly used econometric methods to explore the impact of specific variables or factors in different regions on the TFP of the software industry. Here we provide a solution for the path selection to improve the TFP of the software industry. The DEA-Malmquist index analysis method to measure the TFP of the software industry and the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis method (fsQCA) are adopted to explore the different promotion paths of provinces based on the relevant data of 29 provinces in China. The results show that 5 path configurations achieve high TFP. Specifically, regions with high TFP in the software industry tend to be those with high enterprise scale, high R&D investment, and high R&D personnel investment. When the scale of enterprises is high, the region should fully consider the degree of R&D investment and the degree of higher education.When the investment of R&D personnel is high, the high education level of human factors and the investment intensity of fixed assets of capital factors should be brought into full play.When the investment in fixed assets and R&D investment are high, the region should fully consider the investment of R&D personnel and the scale of the enterprise.
