A Conceptual Framework for Crop-Based Agri-food Supply Chain Characterization Under Uncertainty

Abstract: Crop-based Agri-food Supply Chains (AFSCs) are complex systems that face multiple sources of uncertainty that can cause a significant imbalance between supply and demand in terms of product varieties, quantities, qualities, customer requirements, times and prices, all of which greatly complicate their management. Poor management of these sources of uncertainty in these AFSCs can have negative impact on quality, safety, and sustainability by reducing the logistic efficiency and increasing the waste. Therefore, … Show more

“…The supply chain under study is responsible for the production and distribution of multiple perishable vegetables with limited shelf-life. The shelf life of this vegetables is predetermined and once it has elapsed, the vegetable becomes worthless (Alemany, Esteso, Ortiz, Hernández, Fernández, Garrido et al, 2021). The considered supply chain is composed by farmers, cooperatives, retailers, and markets, who represent the demand of end consumers (Figure 1).…”

“…As complex systems, agrifood supply chains face multiple sources of uncertainty that can cause a significant imbalance between offer and demand in terms of varieties of products, amounts, qualities, client requirements, times and prices. All of these complicate their management (Alemany, et. al, 2021), which forces agricultural producers to confront various structural problems that cause increase in prices of agricultural and food products (Keskin, 2020).…”
