A Concept of Fatigue Damage

Abstract: An experimental investigation was conducted to study the effects of cumulative fatigue damage on endurance life. Stepwise-varying stress sequences were applied to rotating-cantilever-beam specimens. Typical curves of fatigue damage versus cycle ratio were deduced. The effect of scatter in the test results was evaluated.

“…The DCA was introduced by Manson and Halford 11 . It is based on the damage curve concept of Marco and Starkey, 31 which says that fatigue damage accumulation can be expressed as a power function that is load dependent. The equation for calculating the fatigue life under multilevel block loading is given by the following: niNi=1[][][]()n1N1α1,2+n2N2α2,3+n3N3α3,4+...+ni1Ni1αi1,i with0.30emαi1,i=()Ni1Ni0.4 The exponent 0.4 is a material parameter but was found not to be critical.…”

“…One very large study was done in the 1990's by a German group [7]. Generations of researches are trying to improve the damage accumulation theories for better predictability [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. A comprehensive overview by Fatemi and Yang from 1998 is still a good summary for modifications of the linear damage accumulation theory covering the last century [16].…”

“…Richart and Newmark [31] introduced the concept of the damage curve to overcome the deficiencies associated with the linear damage rule. Upon this concept and the results of load sequence experiments, Marco and Starky [9] proposed the first nonlinear load dependent damage theory, represented by a power law:…”
