A comprehensive review on the decontamination of lead(ii) from water and wastewater by low-cost biosorbents

Abstract: Biosorbents are found promising for the detoxification of water contaminants. This comprehensive review indicates that these biosorbents are more efficient and cost-effective for the purification of water and wastewater containing lead(ii) ions.

“…46 The effect of the ionic interactions on the multicomponent sorption system is determined by the ratio of the maximum uptake capacity for one heavy metal ion in the multicomponent system (q mix ), to the uptake capacity for the same heavy metal ion present in the single system (q 0 ). 47 Mathematically, the interaction factor (R qe ) is expressed in eqn (1).…”

“…Water bodies all across the world have recently seen significantly higher levels of contamination due to unrestrained industrial, mining, and agricultural operations, as well as human ignorance regarding unplanned waste disposal. 1 According to the UN, 80% of all industrial and urban wastewater is discharged untreated into the environment, especially in developing nations. 2 However, wastewater is utilized for irrigated agriculture in developing nations due to water scarcity, posing serious health issues to both farmers and consumers while also providing nutrients for cultivated plants.…”

“…Lead and copper were removed from aqueous solutions by pomegranate peel 14 . They may be eliminated through a variety of processes, such as, biosorption 15 , chemical precipitation, electrodialysis, photocatalysis, and adsorption 16 . Silica gel was applied for the removal of lead and cadmium 17 .…”

“…Biomaterials are a valuable alternative for the retention of metal ions and other organic compounds from effluents resulting from the painting and tannery process, respectively. Recently, several papers reported the capacity of bioadsorbents to remove heavy metals and other pollutants from polluted wastewater [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Biomaterials have been explored raw and after chemical modifications in order to enhance adsorption proprieties.…”
