A comprehensive review on the health benefits and nutritional significance of fucoidan polysaccharide derived from brown seaweeds in human, animals and aquatic organisms

Abstract: Fucoidan is a sulphated polysaccharide isolated from brown seaweeds. It has attracted a lot of attention due to its multiple physiological and biological properties. The most dominant polysaccharides in brown seaweeds are laminarin and alginic acid. Fucoidan extracted from brown seaweed possess various biological functions including anti‐inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antitumour, antibacterial, antiviral, anticoagulant, antioxidant, neuroprotective, cardio‐protection and growth‐promoting effects. Dietary supp… Show more

“…The liver is often affected by free radicals, which induce the onset of liver cancer, cirrhosis, hepatitis and other diseases ( Ilavenil et al, 2015 ), which lead to morbidity and mortality. These issues highlight the need to explore the potential of plant-derived products as hepatoprotective and therapeutic agents ( Saeed et al, 2021 ). Historically, olive oil has been a primary ingredient in the Mediterranean diet.…”

“…Different seaweed polysaccharides, used for drug development, have been shown to be effective for the treatment of Inflammatory Diseases of the Intestine [ 176 ]. Saeed et al, [ 177 ] described the therapeutic benefits of a fucose-rich polysaccharide from brown algae, defining its importance for the treatment of ischemic diseases and as an anticancer agent to treat colon cancer. Other medicinal plants, which are potential sources of biologically active polysaccharides, showed immunological, antitumor, antihyperlipidemic, cardioprotective, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects.…”

“…With the advent of drug resistance and the adverse effects of chemosynthetic drugs, the interest in medicinal herbs and plant extracts/metabolites has increased, both among the general public and researchers worldwide. [1][2][3] Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a perennial herbaceous herb with yellow flowers, belonging to the Zingiberaceae family (Fig. 1).…”
