This review gives concise information on green technology (GT) and Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0). Climate change has begun showing its impacts on the environment, and the change is real. The devastating COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected lives and the world from the deadly consequences at a social, economic, and environmental level. In order to balance this crisis, there is a need to transition toward green, sustainable forms of living and practices. We need green innovative technologies (GTI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to develop green, durable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly products for a sustainable future. GTI encompasses all innovations that contribute to developing significant products, services, or processes that lower environmental harm, impact, and worsening while augmenting natural resource utilization. Sensors are typically used in IoT environmental monitoring applications to aid ecological safety by nursing air or water quality, atmospheric or soil conditions, and even monitoring species’ movements and habitats. The industries and the governments are working together, have come up with solutions—the Green New Deal, carbon pricing, use of bio-based products as biopesticides, in biopharmaceuticals, green building materials, bio-based membrane filters for removing pollutants, bioenergy, biofuels and are essential for the green recovery of world economies. Environmental biotechnology, Green Chemical Engineering, more bio-based materials to separate pollutants, and product engineering of advanced materials and environmental economies are discussed here to pave the way toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN and achieve the much-needed IR 4.0 for a greener-balanced environment and a sustainable future. Environmental pollution is becoming more prevalent in both human life and the ecosystem. The increased use of fossil fuels, mining, and the burning of wastes, as well as industrial wastewater discharge, are polluting natural resources such as water, soil, and air. Metals (loid)s (Cu, Cr, Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb, Hg, Sb, Sn, and As) contribute to several ecological problems when exposed to humans and the environment resulting in serious health and environmental risks. The pollution of aquatic and terrestrial sites with these elements is an issue of environmental as well as public health significance. The present review highlights environmental problems instigated by the toxic metal (loid)s, their source, and respective health/environmental concern along with the importance of creating low-cost, environmentally acceptable clean-up technologies for treating household and industrial wastewater. Various physical, chemical, biological, and/or biochemical as well as their various combinations have been described from the sustainable technological point of view. Techniques such as ion exchange, membrane filtration, photocatalysis, bioremediation, phytoremediation, economical biosorbents, and nanomaterials have been discussed in detail along with respective recent case studies to gain a significant inside towards the solution of the environmental problems focused and action-oriented sustainable technologies development. Thus, this article significantly provides a deep insight into metal (loid)s toxicity, source identification, and their influences on the ecosystem and human health along with conventional and sustainable clean-up technologies.

The rapid development in India has resulted in rapid growth in the number of Heavy Motor vehicles(HMV) and light motor vehicles(LMV). Automation and Demand in transportation have also resulted in a tremendous increase in the number of vehicles in mining industries. In a few states, this has doubled in the last decade. Mining activities contribute to the problem of air pollution directly or indirectly. Rapid urbanization and the growth of motor vehicles impose a very serious effect on human life and the environment in recent years. Heavy Motor vehicles in the mining industry, mining blasts, and Open fires are more significant sources of air pollution and are main important contributors to carbon dioxide (CO2), Carbon Monoxide(CO), Nitrogen dioxide(NO2), Hydrogen Sulphide, Methane, and other greenhouse gases. These are the most dangerous gases in the mining industry and not only in the mining industry but also to the mining surrounding areas and other areas. The most important emissions during coal mining, transportation, and active mine fires are Particulate matter (PM), Sulphur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and heavy metals. These air pollutants deteriorate air quality and ultimately affect human health, fauna, and the flora in and around coal mining areas. Air pollution is a serious environmental health threat to humans, flora, and fauna. Adverse effects range from nausea, difficulty in breathing and skin irritations, birth defects, blood, lung cancer, etc. in and around the coal mining areas. All these situations indicate that air pollution in mining areas is becoming an affected problem in the Indian context and also in the rest of the world. The present paper includes a study done on the Jharia coalfield. Due to mining, the criteria most affected are air, water, soil, vegetation, agricultural land, and topography. There is an essential need to build up a healthy environment and increase the level of research and awareness around the world. The present paper is a study of an increase in air pollution in India, especially in mining areas, and its effect on human health, fauna, and flora. The conventional coal fuel cycle is among the most destructive activities on the earth, threatening health, polluting the air, and water, harming the land, and contributing to global warming, and environmental temperature rise. The major sources contributing to air pollution in coal mining-related activities and active mine fires and secondarily vehicular emissions, while windblown dust through unpaved roads also contributed to some extent. It is therefore important that a systematic study on coal mining areas is carried out to assess the effects of coal mining on the particular region and its environment, including, cultural, historical, and social aspects.
