A Comprehensive Review on Selenium and Its Effects on Human Health and Distribution in Middle Eastern Countries

Abstract: Selenium (Se) is an important microelement with numerous positive effects on human health and diseases. It is important to specify that the status and consumption of Se are for a specific community as the levels of Se are extremely unpredictable between different populations and regions. Our existing paper was based on the impacts of Se on human health and disease along with data on the Se levels in Middle Eastern countries. Overall, the findings of this comprehensive review show that the consumption and level… Show more

“…Recent geological studies indicated that the nutritional status of selenium depends on the selenium content of soil. Regarding the uneven distribution on Earth, large differences in selenium content are observed between different regions [34][35][36].…”

“…Forages contain Se in concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 ppm, putting livestock at threat of Se poisoning. Se in wheat plants' seeds is normally stored as selenomethionine (SeMet), with varying levels of Se stored depending on the environment [20]. Compared to other minerals, plants mostly absorb selenite in higher concentrations.…”

“…Selenium and its derivatives have pronounced antioxidant properties, even if they are a part of complex compounds. Feeding healthy rats with chlorella algae, which contains a significant amount of selenium, has lowered the levels of lipid peroxidation indicators in the organs and plasma of animals, such as malondialdehyde and diene conjugates, while increasing the levels of indicators of antioxidant protection, such as the activity of superoxide dismutase, succinate dehydrogenase, catalase, and cytochrome-C-oxidase (Krelszek et al 2021).…”

“…Selenocysteine and selenomethionine are key forms of selenoproteins and are found in various tissues of the body. Selenocysteine is found in animal tissues, while selenomethionine is obtained from yeast, algae, and some plants (Krelszek et al 2021).…”
