This study examined the test taking strategies of weak ESL students of an English language proficiency course. Test taking strategies are known as the methods that test takers use as an alternative aimed at attaining correct answers on a specified form of language assessment. The study adopted a qualitative study. The participants in this study were forty-four learners from the Bachelor of Arts Program. The learners were asked to think aloud while reading an assigned text to answer the questions. Four learners’ thinking aloud recordings were transcribed and analysed. Focus group interviews were carried out for triangulation purposes. Data collected were analysed manually. The ESL learners implemented many test taking strategies as they coped with the reading comprehension test. The findings of the study show how ESL students used cognitive, metacognitive, compensating, and social strategies. Participants expressed that understanding and reading the passage allowed them to draw conclusions better in answering the multiple choice questions. The findings revealed that they used a compensation strategy whereby they tried guessing the answers on a number of occasions. The findings of the study implicate teachers’ roles in L2 reading and also to guide the ESL learners in the process of answering reading passage and answer the comprehension questions.

La transición a la universidad es un proceso de adaptación de enorme complejidad que desafía a las instituciones a generar mecanismos para promover la persistencia de los estudiantes hasta su egreso. Este estudio busca aportar a la comprensión del uso de estrategias de lectura y su relación con los logros académicos de los estudiantes durante la transición a la educación superior. La metodología es cuantitativa, con una muestra no probabilística intencionada de 145 voluntarios: estudiantes de educación media de establecimientos con alto índice de vulnerabilidad y estudiantes ingresantes de una universidad estatal de la Región de Valparaíso en Chile, mediante la aplicación de un instrumento. Entre los principales resultados, se encuentra que los grupos de estudiantes de educación secundaria y universitaria se diferencian significativamente en el tipo y en el uso de estrategias de lectura, las cuales se correlacionan directa y significativamente con el rendimiento académico y son relevantes, ya que usar diferentes estrategias incide en el nivel lector de estudiantes con bajo rendimiento académico, especialmente, en la educación media.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the usage of online reading strategies among EFL pre-service teachers in the Education Program and their pedagogical practices in teaching online reading. A total of 107 participants from the English Education program in East Java were involved in this study. A mixed-method design was used as the research approach. For data collection, this present study used the Second Language Online Reading Strategy Inventory (SLORSI) closed-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Overall, 13 participants were involved in the interview session. Based on the statistical analysis of the questionnaire, it was found that EFL pre-service teachers showed a high level of usage of online reading strategies (M= 3,71 – 4.14). The most frequently used was the Saving strategy (M= 4,14). However, the interview results were inconsistent with the questionnaire; although the participants showed a high level of usage of online reading, they offered different perspectives on teaching online reading. The participants mentioned inadequate reading digital literacy and strategies for future reading classes. Therefore, this study suggests that EFL education programs must highlight the importance of providing explicit practice for pre-service teachers using online reading strategies and model the strategy for future students.
