A comprehensive examination of the optical morphologies of 719 isolated galaxies in the AMIGA sample

Abstract: Using images from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8, we have re-examined the morphology of 719 galaxies from the Analysis of the interstellar Medium in Isolated GAlaxies (AMIGA) project, a sample consisting of the most isolated galaxies that have yet been identified. The goal is to further improve the classifications of these galaxies by examining them in the context of the Comprehensive de Vaucouleurs revised Hubble-Sandage (CVRHS) system, which includes recognition of features that go beyond the origin… Show more

“…They found the fraction of E+S0 galaxies to be significantly smaller-8.5% (3.5+5%)-than that obtained by Sulentic et al (2006). Buta et al (2019) reported a new classification of 719 KIG galaxies and found early-type systems to make up 14% (5.3 and 8.7% for E and S0 galaxies, respectively) of the sample.…”

“…KIG 685 is classified as a peculiar elliptical (E + 0 pec T = −4) by Buta et al () (Table ), while Fernández Lorenzo et al () classified it E/S0, that is, slightly later in type ( T = −3). The total absolute magnitude, adopting the distance reported in Table , suggests that the galaxy is located at the bright end of the magnitude distribution of ETGs.…”

“…We considered the classification provided by Fernandez‐Lorenzo and AMIGA collaborators ( Fernández Lorenzo et al ), HYPERLEDA and Buta et al (2019). KIG 685 is considered an elliptical by all three classifications, while KIG 895 has an uncertain classification: it is a spiral for Buta et al () and HyperLeda and a late S0/a for Fernández Lorenzo et al (). The large uncertainty in the classification, based on SDSS images, needs to be resolved via high spatial resolution images.…”

“…Two ingredients are needed in these processes to allow the formation of a new stellar population: the presence of a cold/molecular gas cloud and a strong perturbation. Strong perturbations are present in most galactic systems in many forms, from gas sound waves (e.g., SNe shells or AGN jets) to tidal perturbations by companions or nonaxisymmetric structures inside galaxies (Buta et al 2019). Besides these special conditions, the formation of cold/molecular clouds is not seen outside the disk plane.…”
