A Compositional Semantics for ‘Even If’ Conditionals

Abstract: Abstract. This paper 1 presents the first possible world semantics for concessive conditionals (i.e., even if A, C conditionals) constructed in a compositional way. First, the meaning of if is formalized through a semantics that builds on the proposal given by Stalnaker [1968]. A major difference from Stalnaker's approach is that irrelevant conditionals (i.e., conditionals where the antecedent and the consequent have no connection) are false in this new setting. Second, the meaning of even is analyzed through … Show more

“…Other conditional logics have been developed along these lines to avoid conjunctive sufficiency also for indicative conditionals. For instance, Vidal (2017) builds on Nute (1980) but introduces a two-stage implementation of the Ramsey test that brackets the current beliefs and disbeliefs in the antecedent before evaluating the consequences of adding the antecedent to one’s belief set. Similarly, Rott (2019) has developed a logic for an expanded notion of the Ramsey test to ensure that the antecedent is relevant for the consequent, which he suggests could either be part of the truth or acceptability conditions of indicative conditionals.…”

“…Mathieu Vidal (2017) presents a formal semantics of if and of even, and a compositional formal semantics of even if. According to him, "both the focused element of even and its complement are parts of a more general set."…”

“…Let us now focus on Vidal's [2017b] alternative approach. Vidal defines a restrictedly connexive logic by building on [Vidal, 2017a] and uses a type of formula-annotated selection function. 17 Due to that, several points of criticism of Kapsner and Omori [2017] hold also for Vidal's logic, such as the lack of a purely structural correspondence theory.…”

“…In contrast to formula-annotated selection functions as described above, this type of selection function takes worlds and sets of formulas as arguments rather than worlds and formulas.18 For the formal details we rely here on Vidal's [2017a] rather than his [2017b] Vidal [2017a]. also puts additional restrictions on the neutralization and expansion function, which we do not discuss here.…”
