A component method for moment-resistant glulam beam–column connections with glued-in steel rods

Abstract: This paper presents an analytical method of the determination of the moment resistance, initial stiffness and the rotation capacity of glulam beam-column connections with glued-in rods. The methodology is based on the component method and is implemented using appropriate mechanical models. As a simplified component of the steel box sections, the substitute T-stub in the model is well verified by the experimental results, whether with or without the transverse web stiffeners. On the basis of the mechanical prop… Show more

“…The tension resistance of bolts can be calculated on the basis of the classic mechanics theory. The transverse compressive resistance of glulam column should be determined according to EN 1993-1-8:2005 (2005) on the basis of the theory proposed by Van der Put (2008) stating that the compressive load perpendicular to grain will spread to the other side within an angle θ , an inference that has also been made by Yang et al (2016).…”

“…The behavior of glued in-rod joints subjected to bending moments was faced in some papers as in Buchanan and Fairweather [20], where several connections incorporating steel bars are described and tested under cyclic loads, and in Andreolli et al [21], where the investigated joint consists of a wooden element connected to a steel stub by means of an end plate and glued-in steel rods, while Fragiacomo and Batchelar [22] presented a method of evaluating joint strength for a beam to column joint, and Yang et al [23] a component method for calculating the joint performance.…”

“…Also there are investigations done analysing complicated timber connections when several basic timber and steel components are combined using component method. Authors investigate timber-steel connections with glued-in steel rods and using component method theoretically determines the bending moment-rotation relation (Yang et al 2016).…”
