A complex network analysis of global tourism flows

Abstract: In this paper, the global tourism network (GTN) is studied in order to gain insight about its structure and the interactions between source and destination markets. To concentrate on the main source and destination markets for each country, only its top k inbound and outbound flows are considered. The distribution of these most important ties in international tourism seems to be scale-free, with some occurrence of reciprocity, large transitivity, and high-degree centralization. “…In the relevant literature, there exists a growing interest in knowing the flow of tourists once they are at their destination, although this analysis can be addressed from different perspectives, such as that of economics or geography, among others [35]. These studies usually focus on the mobility within the destination, considered as a tourist space of its own-usually at a local scale, as in specific cities [52,53], but also in a wider area [54] or even on a global scale [55]. Despite the abundant literature on the measuring of tourist flows, there are very few publications on our area of study (Extremadura), and especially so in the case of protected natural areas.…”

“…However, the above two kinds of techniques, namely the traditional techniques and new tracking techniques, are applied to tourist flows at the micro- or meso-level. Regarding the macro-level, the panel data published by organizations are regarded as important sources for researching tourist flows ( Liu, Li, & Parkpian, 2018 ; Lozano & Gutiérrez, 2018 ; Su & Lin, 2014 ). The large amounts of data available, the use of the same statistics definitions, easy accessibility and long-term data availability, are considered as the main advantages of panel data, which contributes to the wide use of panel data in exploring international tourist flows.…”

“…Global tourism and its corresponding network, Global Tourism Network (GTN), is yet another field of study, given the tremendous financial importance of tourism market. As mentioned in Lozano & Gutiérrez (2018), it is essential to gain insight into the connections between its components. In the same article, an ERGM approach was used to find the critical local substructures of the GTNs.…”
