No biological system or structure is likely to be perfectly symmetrical, or have identical right and left forms. This review explores the evidence for eye and visual pathway asymmetry, in health and in disease, and attempts to provide guidance for those studying the structure and function of the visual system, where recognition of symmetry or asymmetry may be essential. The principal question with regards to asymmetry is not 'are the eyes the same?', for some degree of asymmetry is pervasive, but 'when are they importantly different?'. Knowing if right and left eyes are 'importantly different' could have significant consequences for deciding whether right or left eyes are included in an analysis or for examining the association between a phenotype and ocular parameter. The presence of significant asymmetry would also have important implications for the design of normative databases of retinal and optic nerve metrics. In this review, we highlight not only the universal presence of asymmetry, but provide evidence that some elements of the visual system are inherently more asymmetric than others, pointing to the need for improved normative data to explain sources of asymmetry and their impact on determining associations with genetic, environmental or health-related factors and ultimately in clinical practice.

Populational dermatoglyphic study was conducted in order to gain and compare data between different ethnic groups.The aims of the study were to analyze and compare individual dermatoglyphic features in healthy examinees of Macedonian, Albanian and Roma ethnic origin.Some dermatoglyphic parameters were read on the right and left sole prints obtained from healthy individuals of Macedonian, Albanian and Roma ethnic origin. In each group sole prints were obtained from 100 males and 100 females. Sole prints were taken using Cummins and Midlo's ink method. Dermathoglyphics was classified and comparison was made with the results obtained by other authors.We found that the most present patterns in both sexes were in the hallucal, first interdigital and distal thenar area on the sole.The second more common pattern was found in the third interdigital area, with higher frequency in males than in females, and the smallest frequency was found in Roma females. The next pattern was in the second interdigital configurational area on the sole, and again with higher pattern presence in males than in females.Distal loops were the most abundant pattern, followed by concentric whorls, and the rest of the patterns were found in lower percentage in all groups and both sexes.The results obtained for the present triradii were: d, c>b, a>pm>p>e>p', p'' in males and d>c>a, b>pm>p>e>p'>p'' in females.The results obtained in this study along with data on other dermatoglyphic features elaborated by other authors can serve as the basis for the dermatoglyphic status in the healthy population of Macedonian, Albanian and Roma ethnic origin. They can also serve in further medico-biological investigation for theoretical and scientific purposes.

Fluctuating asymmetry, often considered a measure of developmental instability, was studied in the dental morphological traits of 600 individuals from among the poorest sectors of society in 19 th -20 th century Portugal. The aims are to identify and interpret any differences between: 1) males and females, and 2) patterns of distribution among teeth with different odontogenic timings, to assess if any sex bias existed in childcare.Dental and mandibular morphological traits were recorded using the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System. Z-ratios were used to compare summed absolute fluctuating asymmetry frequencies between sexes and age groups. Results from rank correlation coefficients ruled out directional asymmetry and antisymmetry, based on positive (>0.2) bilateral association of traits in larger samples. Sex differences were significant (z-ratio = 3.128; p = 0.0018), while age differences were not (z-ratio = -0.644; p = 0.5196). Teeth forming after infancy tended to be more asymmetric in females.Potential reasons for the sex difference include: 1) greater female susceptibility to developmental instability, 2) greater male childhood mortality that yields lower fluctuating asymmetry in surviving males, and/or 3) cultural bias favoring male access to resources.Results suggest the latter hypothesis is most likely, as fluctuating asymmetry is enhanced during childhood, perhaps coinciding with gender role definitions. There seems to be no association between asymmetry and early mortality in males. A lack of parallels in prior research renders differential sex reaction to environmental stress dubious. This population may have favored male children in their access to appropriate conditions for development.
