A comparison study of range-extended engines for electric vehicle based on vehicle simulator

Abstract: Electric vehicles have several disadvantages compared to conventional vehicles, such as their road ability and vehicle weight. To overcome these problems, range-extended engine technology has been developed. A range extender is a generator set that consists of an internal combustion engine coupled with a generator that operates when it is required. A vehicle simulator was deployed to compare the performance of three types of range-extended engines i.e. 1-cylinder 389 cc, 1-cylinder 494 cc and 2-cylinder 988 cc… Show more

“…The goal of this research is to understand the comparison of the performance and CO 2 emission of the range extender engine by two types of engine on minimal engine capacity. This study is the continuation of the previous research that has been published previously [14]. In the previous research, some of the gasoline engines were compared to get the best performance and emission of the range extender engine.…”

“…Along with the growth in the number of the appropriate infrastructure needs to be developed, it can provide a reliable and effective functioning of this type of transport. At the moment it is obvious that to do without building a broad urban and suburban network of charging stations for electrobuses and hybrid buses as well as for electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars is impossible which is reflected in the research papers [18][19][20][21]. The charging stations must be equipped in accordance with the environmental safety standards, and renewable and alternative energy sources (solar panels, wind turbines, etc.)…”

“…While it is fully understood that type-approval tests are necessary to standardise the reporting of fuel consumption and emission, real-world tests and driving characteristics form a crucial part of the engine development and testing. Manufacturers are putting in a lot of efforts to improve fuel economy over driving cycles which include technological advances on the engine itself and the development of electrical, hybrid, and range-extended engines [3]. From the industrial perspective, variable displacement, and stop-start systems are becoming widespread technology introduced into the modern market along with engine downsizing.…”
