A comparison of the leaf gel extracts of Aloe ferox and Aloe vera in the topical treatment of atopic dermatitis in Balb/c mice

Abstract: Aloe vera gel is widely used in the treatment of an array of disturbances, especially skin disorders. The woundhealing effects have been attributed to its moisturiz-ing and anti-inflammatory effects as well as its beneficial effect on the maturation of collagen. The aim of the present study is to compare the effects of topically applied extracts of Aloe ferox with that of Aloe vera on the symptoms as well as IgE levels of a mouse model of atopic dermatitis (AD). Mice were sensitized and challenged with 2,4-din… Show more

“…AD is an allergic skin disease. Two key studies have used animal models to study A. vera in AD ; however, these studies obtained contrasting results. One study that applied A vera gel topically in 2,4 dinitrofluorobenzene‐induced AD mice for 10 days reported significant reduction in serum IgE levels and decreased epidermis thickness compared to in the control animals .…”

One study that applied A vera gel topically in 2,4 dinitrofluorobenzene‐induced AD mice for 10 days reported significant reduction in serum IgE levels and decreased epidermis thickness compared to in the control animals . However, a study that evaluated the effects of oral administration of A vera gel extracts on spontaneous AD‐like NC/Nga mice showed that six weeks of treatment with 0.8 mg/kg A vera gel extracts resulted in decreased serum IL‐5 and IL‐10 concentrations, but increased IgE levels compared with those in the control group .…”

“…O efeito antiinflamatório pode estar relacionado ao bloqueio da síntese de prostaglandinas e tromboxano, além de ação antioxidante da vitamina E presente na planta [29]. Recentemente, foi sugerido que o gel de Aloe vera pode ser uma alternativa segura eficaz aos anti-histamínicos e corticoesteróides para o tratamento da dermatite atópica crônica [30].…”
