In this study, biological collection efficiencies and culturable bacterial and fungal aerosol diversities were investigated when different bioaerosol sampling tools and culturing methods were applied. The samplers included Reuter centrifugal sampler (RCS) High Flow, BioSampler, electrostatic sampler, gelatin filter, BioStage impactor, mixed cellulose ester (MCE) filter as well as gravitational settling methods. For culturable bacterial aerosol diversity, the colony-forming units (CFUs) were washed off from the agar plates, and further went through polymerase chain reactionand denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). For culturable fungal aerosol diversity, microscopic identification method was applied.In general, the BioStage impactor, MCE filter, and the BioSampler remained robust when sampling culturable bioaerosols. The PCR-DGGE study revealed that the use of different samplers and culturing methods resulted in different culturable bioaerosol diversity. For indoor bacterial aerosols, the MCE filter with direct culturing on agar plates and the BioSampler resulted in the highest number of visible bands on DGGE gels, followed by the gravitational settling (26 • C), the RCS High Flow, electrostatic sampler, and the MCE filter extracted. However, for outdoor bacterial aerosols, the BioStage impactor obtained the highest number of visible bands followed by the BioSampler, MCE filter, electrostatic sampler, the RCS High Flow, and gravitational settling at 26• C. When sampling fungal aerosols, the electrostatic sampler was observed to produce the highest diversity. Similar to previous studies, Alternaria, Cladosporium, and Aspergillus species were found to dominate the fungal community in most samples collected here.The results obtained here suggested that the sampler design, sampling environments, and culturing methods should be considered together when assessing the biological aerosol exposure.

Biological aerosols from air constitute a significant source of exposure to microorganisms in public places. Airborne microorganisms are involved in the development of certain respiratory symptoms, allergies, or infections among users and occupants. Various sampling instruments have commonly been used in aerobiology to collect bacteria and fungi suspended in the air. The objective of this study was to develop a reliable procedure for sampling in indoor public environments presenting different levels of occupancy, airborne bacteria and fungi to be subjected to molecular analysis (bacteria and fungi quantitative PCR, capillary electrophoresis single strand conformation polymorphism fingerprinting). Four different sampling devices were tested in situ in an office building (open-plan type) and the sampling strategy chosen was tested in two museum contexts. In accordance with the drawbacks involved to our study (quantitative and qualitative aspects, cost, and overcrowding), cyclone device appeared to be most suitable. The results underline the effectiveness of this high-volume aerosol sampling device for both qualitative and quantitative molecular analysis. Four in situ sampling collections were carried out in 1 day in the Louvre Museum to study quantitative and qualitative variations of airborne bacterial and fungal diversity. The quantitative results revealed a similar order of magnitude for the numbers of both bacteria and fungi. In the Louvre Museum, the samples yielded between 3.7 Â indicate that the dominant bacterial community displayed a stable structure over a short period of time whereas dominant eukaryotic airborne community appeared more variable.

Outbreaks of building-related illnesses, collectively termed as sick building syndrome (SBS) among building occupants reported in the recent decades, draw remarkable resemblance to early events of epidemic hysteria. Tarantism, the dancing mania of peasant women (animal-like squealing, obscene shouting, laughing, or weeping) during the fifteenth to seventeenth century, St. John's or St. Vitus' dances in Northern Europe, the hysterical fits of women due to smells from hemp steeped in water (Ramazzini 1713), industrial outbreak among workers in a cotton mill in the eighteenth century England (Gentleman's Magazine 1787), are historically recorded events. Many other early psychogenic illnesses reported from schools, hospitals, prisons, and in warfare, exemplify the results of various reasons, like prominent social concerns and exposure to physical, biological, or chemical agents (Bartholomew and Wessely 2002; Sirois 2013). The SBS manifests as the complex spectrum of ill health symptoms, such as mucous membrane irritation (rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, sore throat, eye irritation), asthma symptoms (chest tightness, wheezing), neurotoxic effects (a headache, fatigue, irritability), gastrointestinal disturbance, skin dryness, sensitivity to odours. These symptoms may appear among occupants in office buildings, schools, public buildings, hospitals, and recreational facilities. The rapid spread of symptoms often leads to the virtual closure of the facility, and resolution of the illness also takes place within a short time after leaving the facility (Laumbach 2008; Takeda et al. 2009). Building-related illnesses have been viewed as ubiquitous in modern high-rise buildings. These are designed to be airtight on energy-saving considerationwindows remain sealed, deprived of natural ventilation and daylighting, and HVAC system re-circulates the air in the building, with the minimal replacement of fresh air.
