A comparison of Progrip® and Adhesix® self-adhering hernia meshes in an onlay model in the rat

Abstract: In our hands, PP (mechanical grip fixation) was superior to hydrogel fixation with PEG and PVP in AH in an onlay model. The reason for dislocation of AH requires further clarification as well as the impact of long-term degradation of the PLA grips.

“…compared the self-fixation meshes PP and Adhesix TM in an animal study, and showed better results and greater stability for the PP implant, due to the longer effect of adherence provided by its minigrips, which degraded for several months. [ 36 59 ] We could not validate this finding because of lack of experience with this type of mesh.…”

“…Self-adhering mesh has been shown to have superior gripping strength to both laparoscopic staples and fibrin glue over the short and medium terms. 11 It has also been shown to incorporate well over the long term, 10 thus acting as a durable reinforcement to the fascia.…”

“…The microgrips provide secure mesh fixation and distribute the tension along the entire surface area of the mesh, allowing strong purchase of the mesh against the tissue. 10 The strength of the mesh purchase against tissues has been found to be superior to laparoscopic staples and fibrin glue at 5 days and 2 months, respectively. 11 The mesh also has been found to achieve good tissue incorporation.…”

“…Its numerous advantages gave a boost to a broad utilization in hernia surgery, including atraumatic fixation and the facility to handle and to orient the mesh under laparoscopic condition. In a rat model investigation, Gruber‐Blum et al demonstrated that this self‐adhesive mesh was perfectly integrated in abdominal muscles, without any signs of implant dislocation and seroma formation (Figure B,C) …”

“…However, long‐term clinical studies revealed that this technology was not completely free of side‐effects, and first cases of chronic pain, recurrence and other mesh‐related symptoms have been reported . A competitor company (Cousin Biotech) has launched an auto‐adhesive mesh (Adhesix) based on a monofilament PP implant coated with PEG and PVP, but the few contradictory studies available did not encourage its utilization …”
