The Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R) is among the most commonly used measures of pain intensity in clinical and research settings. Little evidence exists about the Brazilian version of this scale. The purpose of the present study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Brazilian version of the FPS-R. The sample comprised 214 children, 6 to 10 years of age. In the first phase of the study, the children ranked the faces of the FPS-R according to pain intensity, and the faces were presented in all possible pair combinations (content validity). All six faces were correctly ranked by 47% of the younger children (6 to 7 years old) and 52% of the older children (8 to 10 years old). With regard to paired combinations, all of the pairs were correctly placed by 63% of the younger children and 67% of the older children. In the second phase, the children rated recalled experiences of pain using both the Brazilian version of the FPS-R and Coloured Analogue Scale (CAS; convergent validity). The children were retested 4 weeks later (test-retest reliability). The degree of agreement between the FPS-R and CAS was moderate, with a Kendall's tau-b (τ) of .49 (p < .01). The test-retest reliability coefficient was τ = .52 (p < .01). This study provides evidence of the validity and reliability of the FPS-R as a pain intensity measurement for use in Brazilian samples.

Bu öznelliğin getirdiği bir Çocuklarda Ağrı Değerlendirme ve Ölçekleri: Kültür ve Yaşın Ağrı Değerlendirmesine Etkileri Ö ÖZ ZE ET T Çocukların hastaneye başvurmalarına neden olan en yaygın olgulardan biri, evrensel deneyim olan ağrı varlığıdır. Ağrı çok yaygın olmasına rağmen öznel ve kişisel bir deneyimdir. Ağrının en doğru şekilde anlaşılması ancak kişinin kendi raporu ile mümkündür. Çünkü insanlar yapısal olarak aynı ağrı sistemine sahip olsa da ağrı sinyallerinin talamustan duyusal kortekse iletimi sırasında oluşan ağrı algılama süreci, gelişimsel ve kültürel faktörler dâhil birçok etmene göre şekillenmektedir. Bu kişisel sürecin şekillenmesine etki eden faktörler, kişilerin ağrı ifadelerine ve davranışlarına da önemli derecede etki etmektedir. Kliniklerde ise sağlık çalışanları sıklıkla çocuklarda ağrı problemi ile karşı karşıya kalmaktadırlar ve ağrı tedavisine başlamadan önce ağrıyı ölçmeleri gerekmektedir. Fakat, ağrı algı ve ifadesi kültür ve yaşa göre farklılık göstermesi yanı sıra; çocuklar, gelişimsel özellikler nedeni ile ağ-rılarını erişkinler gibi ifade edebilecek iletişim kâbiliyetine sahip değillerdir. Tüm bunlar, çocuklarda ağrı değerlendirme sürecini çok daha karmaşık ve zor bir hâle getirmektedir. Bu nedenlerden dolayı, pediatrik ağrı değerlendirme süreci çok daha hassas ve özel olmalıdır. Background: Many self-report pain scales are available to assess the intensity of pain reported by children. There is hardly any research to compare their validity in Sri Lankan children. Objective:To compare 3 self-report pain scales viz. FACES Pain Scale (FPS), Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NRS) and Verbal Pain Rating Scale (VRS). Method:The study population comprised children 4-12 years old who presented to the paediatric ward and clinic of Ampara General Hospital with a complaint of pain from July 2012 to June 2013. Each child graded the pain intensity on the three pain scales introduced in random order by a trained investigator and rated the most easily understood scale. The investigator was asked to rate the most easily explainable scale in the individual case. The scales were ranked according to internal consistency, child preference and investigator preference.Results: There were 152 children aged between 4-12 years who presented to the paediatric ward and clinic of Ampara General Hospital with a complaint of pain during the study period. The correlations between FPS/NRS, FPS/VRS and NRS/VRS were 0.82, 0.73 and 0.73 respectively, all with p<0.001, indicating moderate to high correlation and measuring the same construct. The Cronbach alpha was 0.9021 indicating that the internal consistency of these three scales was very high. The Bland-Altman analysis showed limits of agreement of FPS/ NRS, FPS/VRS and NRS/VRS to be -3.2 to +3.1, -3.3 to +4.4 and -3.3 to +4.4 respectively. There was no significant difference between young (4-7) and old (8-12) three pain scales. The FPS ranked best followed by the VRS and NRS. Conclusions:The reliability of all three pain scales in terms of correlation and internal consistency is moderate to high in Sri Lankan children. The FPS is recommended since it is easily understood by children and because of its easy administration and favourable internal consistency.
