& Seafood sector can contribute to the global food supply in an important way, and provide an important source of animal protein. Based on observed regional trends in seafood production and consumption and using a global, partial-equilibrium, multi-market model, this study investigates what the global seafood market may look like in 2030. The model projects that the total fish supply will increase from 154 million tons in 2011 to 186 million tons in 2030, with aquaculture entirely responsible for the increase. The fastest aquaculture growth is expected for tilapia and shrimp, while the largest expansion is expected in India, Latin America and Caribbean and Southeast Asia. Fast-growing seafood demand in China and elsewhere represents a critical opportunity for global fisheries and aquaculture to improve their management and achieve sustainable seafood economy.

This study provides an overview of successful genetic improvement programmes for important farmed aquaculture species in Asia, with a focus on lessons and experiences gained as well as challenges remaining. In both fish and prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), conventional selective breeding approaches have resulted in significant improvement in productivity, with genetic gains ranging from 8 to 12% per generation. Selection for high growth has also brought about beneficial changes in fillet weight of fish and edible meat in prawns without detrimental effects on flesh quality attributes and fitness-related traits. Genetically improved animals show remarkable vigour and high adaptation to a range of culture environments/conditions in Asian countries. Despite these successes, however, the conduct and practical implementation of such breeding programmes still present several challenges. These include the expansion of breeding objectives, management of inbreeding in closed-selection populations, controlling the effects of genotype by environment interactions, simultaneous production of large number of fulland half-sib families for species with asynchronous spawning behaviour, maintaining pedigree records, dissemination of the improved strains for widespread production, as well as a reluctance by many to carry out systematically designed genetic improvement for aquatic animal species. There are also challenges with regard to the application of genomic information in genetic enhancement programmes and the development of genetically improved strains in response to climate and environmental changes. In this study, each of these challenges is discussed and solutions are proposed to increase efficiency of future genetic improvement programmes for economically important aquaculture species.

ABSTRAKIkan mas rajadanu mempunyai karakter cepat tumbuh dan tahan penyakit. Selective breeding merupakan salah satu upaya dalam peningkatan mutu induk dan benih. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat respons pertumbuhan dan nilai heritabilitas pada ikan mas rajadanu (F-3) yang berpotensi tumbuh lebih cepat dibandingkan dengan generasi sebelumnya (F-2). Pembentukan ikan mas rajadanu F-3 dilakukan dengan metode hierarki (satu jantan membuahi empat betina). Pengujian respons seleksi dilakukan terhadap benih hasil pemijahan induk ikan mas rajadanu F-2 yang terseleksi. Terbentuk sebanyak 25 famili dan dipelihara secara terpisah selama 160 hari pada kolam beton ukuran 1,5 m x 1 m dengan ketinggian air 60 cm. Kolam digunakan sebanyak 25 buah. Respons seleksi dihitung dengan melihat nilai rata-rata pertumbuhan F-3 dibandingkan dengan F-2. Hasil penelitian menunjukan performa ikan mas rajadanu F-3 memiliki nilai respons seleksi (14,20 g); nilai heritabilitas (0,60); pertambahan bobot (41,63 ± 10,51 g); dan pertambahan panjang (9,86 ± 1,43 cm).
