A comparison of communal and separate rearing of families in selective breeding of common carp (Cyprinus carpio): Estimation of genetic parameters

The ability to fully control sexual maturation and spawning and to produce large numbers of high quality seeds 'on demand' (i.e. all year long) is a primary requirement for the successful development of aquaculture. This relies on optimal broodstock management practices based on extensive knowledge of the nutritional and environmental requirements of fish in captivity. However, for many established, emerging and new farmed fish species, such knowledge is limited or not available yet. The level of domestication also plays an essential role as stocks with improved traits in farming conditions are selected. Importantly, reliable indicators of egg quality are still lacking and hatcheries still rely on wild harvested broodstocks in many farmed fish species. These key challenges must be addressed urgently to ensure the sustainable development of the European fish farming sector. This review gives an overview of methods to assess egg/sperm quality and many of the most important factors affecting gamete production and quality, including broodstock nutrition, environmental and spawning induction protocols, genetic management, gamete preservation and new reproductive strategies.

a b s t r a c tApplication of DNA parentage assignment for commercial selection in aquaculture is still rare. An experiment was performed to quantify and to minimize maternal effects on growth in rainbow trout. Six hundred families were reared until 198 day post fertilization (dpf) according to two different procedures. In the first procedure (NORM), all families were pooled at eyed stage. In the second procedure (MIN), where maternal effects due to differences in egg size were expected to be minimal, the spawns were divided into sub-groups with similar mean egg weight at eyed stage. These sub-groups were then pooled when they achieved the same mean body length (147 dpf). Genetic parameters were estimated for body weight, body length and condition factor at 198 dpf, with 2964 fish assigned to their parents using microsatellites. Significant maternal effects were observed in the NORM group for body weight and body length (m 2 ¼ 0.08 7 0.03). The heritability of body weight was 0.16 7 0.07 in the NORM group and 0.367 0.06 in the MIN group, in which maternal effects were not significant. It is concluded that, when eggs of different females are mixed at eyed stage, maternal effects persist at least until 198 dpf. The proposed procedure efficiently limits maternal effects, substantially increasing the heritability for growth, and therefore the expected selection response.

ABSTRAKStrain Rajadanu merupakan populasi ikan mas yang mempunyai daya tahan terhadap serangan koi herpes virus (KHV) relatif lebih baik dibandingkan strain lainnya. Namun demikian, populasi ikan dengan daya tahan yang tinggi diduga mempunyai laju pertumbuhan yang lebih lambat. Hal ini karena adanya fenomena sharing energy untuk berbagai karakter yang berbeda. Dalam kegiatan seleksi, salah satu strategi yang dapat ditempuh untuk mengantisipasi fenomena tersebut adalah dengan melakukan seleksi secara bersamaan (tandem selection) terhadap karakter-karakter tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan populasi ikan mas strain Rajadanu dengan laju pertumbuhan cepat, sebagai bagian dari program perakitan strain unggul ikan mas tahan KHV. Sebagai hewan uji adalah populasi dasar (F0) sintetik yang dibentuk tahun 2010, terdiri atas 2 cohort ikan mas strain Rajadanu dengan masing-masing populasi terdiri atas 10 famili yang bersifat full-sib. Seleksi dilakukan menggunakan metode seleksi individu (mass selection) pada saat bobot rata-rata populasi mencapai ukuran konsumsi, yaitu antara 200-300 g/ekor. Cut off seleksi ditentukan berdasarkan hasil sampling sebelum kegiatan seleksi dilakukan, yaitu bobot individu terendah pada 20% individu terbaik, sebesar 400 g. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bobot rata-rata pada cohort 1 dan 2 masing-masing sebesar 271,91 g dan 247,49 g dengan bobot rata-rata populasi terseleksi masing-masing cohort sebesar 558,18 g dan 528,08 g, sehingga menghasilkan nilai diferensial seleksi sebesar 286,27 g dan 280,39 g. Hasil analisis terhadap nilai heritabilitas (dalam arti luas/broad sense) karakter bobot kedua cohort ikan mas tersebut sebesar 42% dan 30%. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, prediksi respon seleksi yang akan diperoleh pada generasi selanjutnya (F1) pada masing-masing cohort sebesar 123,01 g dan 84,12 g setara dengan 45,27% dan 33,96%.
