A Comparison of 3T and 7T in the Detection of Small Parenchymal Veins Within MS Lesions

Abstract: This study suggests that ultra high field imaging is advantageous in demonstrating detailed structural anatomy of MS lesions. 7T T2* imaging can be used in the future to investigate the pathogenesis of MS lesions. The potential for ultra high field imaging to discriminate between MS white matter lesions and microangiopathic lesions warrants further investigation as this would represent a clinically useful application.

“…Our study is one of only several that have demonstrated the feasibility of detection of CVS on 3T MRI in MS,19, 20, 30, 31 and only a few studies have investigated whether the CVS distinguishes MS from other populations at 3T 16, 18. Lummel et al 16.…”

“…These signs are particularly visible with MRI systems that operate at high magnetic field strengths (≥3.0 T). [42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49] Susceptibilityweighted imaging (SWI), a sequence first described in 2004, 50 has also shown high sensitivity for detecting ironcontaining tissue and small veins because of their paramagnetic properties. This capability has conferred added value to MRI for diagnostic purposes, particularly when SWI is co-registered and mixed with standard pulse sequences such as T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), which is termed FLAIR*.…”
