A comparison between portable ultrasound (MIDUS) and nocturnal RigiScan when confirming the diagnosis of vascular organic erectile disorder

Abstract: In recent years, the use of RigiScan and ultrasound to assess erectile dysfunction has fallen from favour. However, in a small minority of specialist cases, where a vascular, neurogenic or psychogenic aetiology requires confirmation, there remains a need for further investigation. To establish if in a preliminary assessment the use of nocturnal RigiScan or male impotence diagnostic ultrasound system (MIDUS) represents best practice as a diagnostic investigation in patients with a history suggestive of vascular… Show more

“…RigiScan is traditionally used to differentiate between psychogenic and organic ED [1–3]. As the RigiScan is a noninvasive technique, some researchers tried to use it in differentiating subtypes of organic ED especially the vasculogenic types and they correlated its results with other diagnostic modalities [22–24].…”

“…RigiScan is traditionally used to differentiate between psychogenic and organic ED (4). As the RigiScan is a noninvasive technique, some researchers tried to use it in differentiating subtypes of organic ED especially the vasculogenic types and they correlated its results with other diagnostic modalities (22,23). However, whether RigiScan could distinguish psychogenic from organic ED is still a matter of controversy (24).…”

“…The presence of arterial insufficiency has an even greater impact on the parameters measured by NPT than on CDDU without any meaningful method of compensation, thus rendering CDDU more useful in the presence of arterial insufficiency. 20 NPT electrobioimpedance (NPTE, or Nocturnal Electrobioimpedance Volumetric Assessment, NEVA) aims to assess the three-dimensional (3D) volumetric penile change with tumescence rather than the two-dimensional change assessed with standard NPT. Three electrode pads, one on the hip, one at the penile base and the other on the glans penis are employed with a recording device fitted to the patient's thigh.…”
