A Comparison between Mixed-Mode and Face-to-Face Instructional Delivery Approaches for Engineering Analysis: Statics.

Abstract: Dr. Zaurin obtained his Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering from 'Universidad de Oriente' in Venezuela in 1985. In 1990 he earned a MSc in Information Technology. He has been civil engineering professor with teaching experience at his Alma Mater (Universidad de Oriente) from 1986 until 2002. Dr. Zaurin moves to USA and completes another MSc, this time Structural and Geotechnical Engineering. Upon completing multidisciplinary PhD on Structural Health Monitoring Using Computer Vision, he joined UCF in 2010 as … Show more

“…The results in Figure 3 corroborate the fact that the students perceive the lecture video-based blended instruction as an effective way to learn course materials. These results are consistent with data reported by similar studies conducted on lecture video-based blended learning in engineering courses [2], [21]. Student satisfaction and student attitude toward the blended course were also gauged through the survey questions.…”

“…More students also felt that they would do "worse" in meeting the objective identified in question 8 (Gain an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences). The responses to the remaining questions (5,7,9,11,12) indicate students felt that they would meet the learning objectives in about the same manner with the online learning environment compared to in-person in the pre-survey.…”

“…Many instructors who have built flipped classrooms have done so slowly and are continuously refining their courses. This has resulted in the "blended" or "mixed-mode" flipped class where part of the content is covered in class and part is covered virtually [14], [15]. This allows for a more seamless transition for students and instructors from traditional lecture style in-class format to a more active classroom environment.…”
