“…Their spectrum of TMV RNA contains lines at 1460, 1126, 1180, 1050, 998, and 888 cm"1 which have intensities not typical of RNA (Thomas, 1970) and might be due in part to inorganic phosphate contaminants (Chapman & Thirlwell, 1964). Shie et al (1978) have also published and interpreted a…”

“…The Raman frequencies cited by Shie et al (1978) at 816 (peak) and 796 cm"1 (shoulder) are very important since they are in the region of conformationally sensitive, phosphodiester frequencies discussed above. We have reviewed all of our spectra of TMV taken both before and after the publication of the data of Shie et al (1978), at resolutions of 5 cm'1 as well as 10 cm"1, and in no case do we find a shoulder at 796 cm'1. The latter value is in fact near a minimum in our spectra.…”

“…Therefore, the enhancement factor can be corrected to be at least 10 6 , which corresponds well with values given in the literature. [19,28,29] However, an even higher enhancement factor can be achieved by adjusting the excitation wavelength to perfectly match with the [33] 1629 1632 1632 Tyr, Phe, Trp [9,32] 1617…”
