The success of projects using web service will, to a large extent depend on effective interface design and development methodologies used in the construction of web applications. As service interface constitutes the basic building blocks of service oriented applications; decisions about what constitute a service operation and what elements are inside the schema are of vital importance. This paper proposes to use a minimalistic design approach to optimise a set of standard business documents and interfaces where multiple business events consume related business documents. The core idea of the interface design is that any events to be applied to a document are to be included in the document itself. Thus the resulting interface is able to process multiple actions corresponding to a business document. The method will not only reduce the number of interfaces in the service and the elements in the message but ultimately reduce the number of messages exchanged.

One of the major issues in system integration is to deal with interoperability of legacy systems which use traditional System Integration Patterns (SIP). Information are unable to exchange effectively when the systems involved comes from developer that tended to not interoperate and this leads to the interoperability problem in heterogeneous system integration. To address the interoperability issues, interfacing processes need to be made more easily by defining components, processes, and interfaces that affect the system integration architecture at the initial design stage. This paper includes a basic concept on types of traditional SIP covering File-Based, Common Database, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Distributed Objects, and Messaging. An overview of three Service Interface Design (SID) approaches for systems interoperability is discussed. The discussions on these approaches serve as a basis for the solution of interoperability of heterogeneous systems which use traditional SIP.

Innovative eCustoms solutions play an important role in the pan-European eGovernment strategy. The underlying premise is interoperability postulating a common understanding of processes, services and the documents that are exchanged between business and government organizations as well as between governmental authorities of different EU member states. This article provides a stringent approach for deriving documents and services from current eCustoms procedures based on the UN/CEFACT standards framework and for embedding these in a service oriented architecture for Collaborative eGovernment. In doing so, we put a special focus on document engineering by applying the UN/CEFACT Core Component Technical Specification (CCTS), a conceptual framework for modeling document components in a syntax neutral and technology independent manner. By relying on CCTS, we want to tackle the challenge of handling different document configurations imposed by divergent national legislations, different customs procedures (export, import, transit, and excise) and different industries. The resulting conceptual model is transferred to XML schema serving as a basis for Web Services design and implementation. These Web Services are designed for seamless interoperable exchange of electronic customs documents between heterogeneous IS landscapes both on business and government side. Beyond the theoretical deduction practical insights are gained from a European research project implementing the artifacts proposed in a real-world setting.
