A comparative evaluation of the biological effects of environmental cadmium-contaminated control diet and laboratory-cadmium supplemented test diet

Abstract: This study was designed to examine the effects of a diet contaminated by environmental cadmium on organ/body weight ratio and selected toxicological indices. It was also designed to permit a comparative analysis of the effects of the diet contaminated by environmental cadmium and that of cadmium supplemented diet based on the same parameters. Our results show that even though the cadmium content of the environmental cadmium contaminated diet was 300% less than that of the cadmium supplemented diet, the former … Show more

“…We observed lower liver relative weight after Cd exposure, which is in accordance with other studies. 36,37 Liver Cd accumulation ranged from 12 to 14 mg/g tissue, which is in agreement with previous findings. 5,6 Furthermore, we observed that the liver Cd concentration and the amount of Cd retained was higher in the flax-Cd group than in the other Cdgroups.…”

“…Calcium carbide is considered a very hazardous toxin especially as a food processing agent because it contains traces of the heavy metal arsenic. 18 Alteration in body and alteration in body weight is usually considered a toxicity index 1,9 . In this study, there was a slight decrease(P>0.05) in liver body weight ratios of rats exposed to carbide treated banana (CTB) and a significant (P<0.05) decrease in body weight of rats exposed to arsenic only via feed (Table 2).…”

“…Copper 7-10 , Zinc 9-13 , Nickel [14][15][16] and the yeast enzymes in particular are also inhibited by sodium and calcium ions. The effect of the latter can be reduced through the addition of phosphates to complex the calcium and through the heat treatment of milk or whey to precipitate calcium as calcium phosphate.Other minerals ions are responsible for increasing the activity of β-D galactosidase [17][18][19][20][21] . The most important activators are potassium, manganese ions 22,23 .…”
