A Compact Frequency and Radiation Reconfigurable Antenna for 5G and Multistandard Sub-6 GHz Wireless Applications

Abstract: This paper presents a reconfigurable antenna operating in three modes at different frequency bands with pattern reconfiguration. Frequency and pattern reconfigurability are achieved using four PIN diodes. In particular, two diodes are mounted in the radiating part of the hexagon shape to perform the frequency reconfiguration of the antenna. The other two PIN diodes are connected with the inverted L-shaped and CPW ground by changing the main lobe beam steering to achieve the pattern reconfiguration. An antenna … Show more

“…In [7], a frequency-pattern reconfigurable antenna was designed, and the reconfiguration process was achieved using an electrical switching mechanism with four PIN diodes. The antenna operates at 2.45 GHz, 3.1 GHz, 4.1 GHz, 3.8 GHz, 7.8 GHz, and 9.5 GHz, which is suitable for various wireless applications.…”

“…From the above research [7][8][9][10], the antenna suffers from low to moderate gain arising from the capacitive effect of the ground plane in addition to using via [9] that produces losses and affects the radiation pattern. To eliminate the losses resulting from such a technology, it has become necessary to present new designs that reduce these losses; This is the focus of this research.…”

“…Their frequency switching relied on a single varactor diode, and the effect of altering the diode's positioning was tested. An antenna using two PIN diodes is presented in [10], covering several frequencies from 3.1 to 9.5 GHz, while changing the radiation pattern for different operation modes. A multiband frequency reconfigurable antenna was designed and implemented in [11].…”

“…Most of the available literature concerning antenna reconfiguration characteristics via PIN diodes has so far concentrated on two or more PIN diodes [10][11][12]15,18,[21][22][23][24][25][26]. On the other hand, fewer studies have been published with only one PIN diode [14,27,28].…”

“…The antenna has achieved dual-band operation in each switching state. The reconfigurable antenna can be designed with radiation pattern reconfigurability, i.e., the radiated power distribution can be controlled spatially in the antenna's surrounding area [19][20][21] . In 19 , a reconfigurable radiation pattern MIMO antenna is designed as a rectangular monopole with two parasitic strips equipped with PIN diodes.…”
