A combined multiphase electric drive and fast battery charger for Electric Vehicles

Abstract: Currently, the main technical weaknesses of Electrical Vehicle (EV) are the limitation of the on-board energy storage and the time to recharge it. Despite of recent improvements in batteries, these drawbacks as well as the cost make the EV not yet attractive. Real challenges for Power Electronics engineers are not only the cost reduction through new system optimizations but also the autonomy increase through the global efficiency improvement and the introduction of a cheap fast on-board charger. “…2, the 3H-Bridge converter uses a machine without neutral point. The advantage of this architecture is to allow the application of the full DC link voltage to each PMSM stator winding [10]- [12]- [26]. However, with this specific architecture, the zero-sequence current is not structurally rejected, unlike the classical solution with a star neutral point topology [27].…”

“…In addition, there is no neutral point for the machine connected with the converter with three Hbridges, thus the full DC-link voltage to each PMSM stator winding can be applied [83,84], while the zero-sequence current cannot be structurally rejected. The specific SVPWM method which is most suitable for EV requirement was selected by combining all the following advantages: switching loss minimization, balanced switching rate between the three H-bridges, insensitivity to duty cycle, maximized drive performance, and reduction of the zero-sequence current ripple [82].…”

“…On-board bidirectional chargers can be further divided into two main types of structures: reused (or integrated) structures and independent structures. In the reused structure, the EV motor's inverter is used as the full-bridge circuit of the grid-tied inverter; the EV motor's windings as the input inductances of the grid-tied inverter; and the EV motor itself as a line-frequency transformer for galvanic isolation [40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48]. By using the existing system in the EV, the reused topologies incur lower costs.…”
