Purpose Outsourcing is a crucial tool for an organization to focus on its core business operations. The purpose of this study is to find critical success factors (CSFs) of outsourcing and to prioritize the performance outcomes of outsourcing because of the adoption of its CSFs. Design/methodology/approach This research proposes the hybrid framework of fuzzy Delphi, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP) and fuzzy additive ratio assessment (F-ARAS) to fulfill the research objectives. Fuzzy Delphi is used to finalize the CSFs of outsourcing and F-AHP provides the relative weights to it. F-ARAS is used to prioritize the outsourcing performance indicators with respect to CSFs. The empirical case investigation of three Indian large-scale public sector process industries is conducted to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework. Findings The result shows that increased dominance in core activity, ability to increase or decrease capacity, improved financial performance, optimized resource utilization and increased market share are the top five performance outcomes because of the adoption of outsourcing CSFs. Research limitations/implications Factors such as cultural, political, environmental and size of the organization may have a significant implication on the research results. Originality/value This is a novel approach towards the prioritization of performance outcomes of outsourcing. Moreover, the present research is a helpful tool to manage outsourcing and choosing which performance outcome of outsourcing ought to be used to measure implementation. This will help to recognize potential opportunities and preparing strategic planning for both short-term and long-term goals.

Multi‐attribute decision‐making (MADM) is one of the most important parts in decision‐making theory, and related research is becoming more and more popular over the past few years. Investigating that the information could be qualitative and quantitative, and the different measurement units cause difficulties in some MADM problems, the additive ratio assessment system (ARAS) method was proposed. The method tries to solve MADM problems through a simple way efficiently, and at the same time eliminates the influence of different measurement units. Till now, the method has received extensive attention and has been extended to different information environments and application fields. To know about the development of the method and improve the method efficiently, this paper reviews the studies on the ARAS method from the perspectives of basic information (including the bibliometrics analyses and the outline of ARAS method), the development on theory (including the development on MADM mechanism, different information environments, and combination with different methods), the development on the application and the future challenge. From the overview, the basic situations and the development of the ARAS method are presented clearly, and the analyses of the challenges can also provide useful and sufficient instructions for the future application and improvement of the method.

Purpose Supplier selection for capital procurement is a major strategic decision for any automobile company. The decision determines the success of the company and must be taken systematically with the utmost transparency. The purpose of this paper is to construct capital procurement decision-making model to optimize supplier selection in the Indian automobile industry. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the stated objective, a combined approach of fuzzy theory and AHP-DEMATEL is applied. Evaluation parameters are identified through an extensive literature review and criteria validation has been introduced through a Fuzzy Delphi method by using fuzzy linguistic scales to handle the vagueness of information. AHP is employed to find the priority weight of criteria, although an inter-relationship map among criteria is not possible through AHP alone since it considers all criteria as independent. To overcome this, DEMATEL is used to establish cause-effect relationships among criteria. Findings The results show that the total cost of ownership (TOC) is the first weighted criterion in supplier selection for capital procurement, followed by manufacturing flexibility and maintainability, then conformity with requirement. The cause-effect model shows that supplier profile, TOC, service support and conformity with requirement are in the cause group and are considered to be the most critical factors in selecting the supplier. Originality/value The study’s outcome can help the automobile industry to optimize their selection process in selecting their suppliers for capital procurement; the proposed model can provide guidelines and direction in this regard.
