PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the current practices of tool and die development, particularly in the Malaysian context with respect to collaborative manufacturing (CM). It is important to gauge the presents of CM, which is one of the key elements of Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) so that significant initiatives could be taken. The findings are also expected to address the issues pertaining limited information related to collaborative tool and die development in Malaysia.Design/methodology/approachA survey was carried out among the key players in the local tool and die industry, covering issues such as operational structure in practice, internal collaboration, external collaboration and application of collaborative technology.FindingsThe results revealed that although practitioners realise that there are systems and available technological support, unfortunately, it has not been embraced due to poor communication, lack of commitment and cooperation from employees and business owners. In addition, industry players also need to be aware of the benefits concerning CM for a sustainable future.Research limitations/implicationsMany industry players are rather reluctant to participate in surveys and tend to reserve their opinions regarding their operational practices. Lack of awareness among the industry players contributed to the poor participation of the survey and based on the feedback, some of the industry players are not well-informed regarding the latest developments in the industry.Originality/valueThe data and feedback gained through the research offer the perspective for the current state of CM particularly the tool and die industry in Malaysia. This may be a preliminary study with limited data but the value of the information is significant for further in-depth study and policy alignment towards enhancing the tool and die industry which is rarely given attention to. Understanding the current state of CM particularly in the tool and die development would be critical for the expansion of IR 4.0 concerning this field in Malaysia.

To control manufacturing processes, integration of flows of manufacturing information is an important starting point. In this regard, an effective Integrated Manufacturing Information System (IMIS) which is capable of monitoring, analyzing, and inspecting manufacturing processes properly is critical. Often, most of difficulties in achieving an effective IMIS stem from a poor design for the system architecture. This study particularly addresses the problem of coupling in architecture of an IMIS and its effect on the system performance. This study employs “Independence Axiom” of the Axiomatic Design (AD) theory to deal with the problem and uses “times in process” and “utilized capacities of available resources” as two important criteria for evaluating the system performance. To verify the proposed methodology, a real IMIS is addressed, its stochastic behavior is simulated in Visual SLAM and AweSim (version 3.o) software environment, and the outcomes are analyzed by using logistic regression method for each level of system decomposition. Results of the analyses indicate that fulfillment of independence axiom of AD theory can significantly enhance performance of the concerned IMIS.

Modern manufacturing and production systems have growing demands in energy and cost savings, which can be ensured using more advanced control algorithms at the regulatory-level industrial control loops. However, developing such algorithms requires case-dependent approach that involves complex mathematics and expertise in various fields of technology and engineering. Gathering all the needed experts to conduct the control system engineering cycle is nearly impossible for organizational and economic reasons. Thus, in this work, it is proposed to employ an agent-based approach, which is substantially different than the conventional engineering cycles for developing the static control system. The idea is to split the entire control design procedure into smaller tasks of developing the modules (i.e. agents), which encapsulate the expert knowledge (e.g. on sensor failure detection, input signal modelling and estimation). It enables clear division of the competences between the experts and allows for dynamic inclusion of the expert knowledge into the newly designed or already existing system. Therefore, the expertise may be distributed both in location and in time, which stands in contradiction to the static approach based on sequential engineering cycles.
