Recently, the customs chemistry laboratory of Bari, Italy, initiated a project to organize activities for students, with the purpose of promoting awareness of its role and services in the Apulia region, as well as to encourage students to study chemistry. This paper aims to show how the project can be an effective way to introduce students to the role of chemical analysis in the evaluation and valorization of one of the more-exported Italian products, by means of a 2 h lab-integrated lecture. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) was the product chosen as it is one of the more widely known symbols in the world of being "made in Italy". Great attention has been devoted to the importance of the sensorial analysis of EVOO. Through this activity, students are introduced to the richness of their own sensory skills in the context of the official custom regulations. Evidence collected from the postactivity student survey responses indicates that this integrated lab− lecture was extremely successful at accomplishing the aims identified, and that students particularly appreciated the multidisciplinary approach.

One Discovery Leads to Another: An Interactive Summer Workshop on Sensors for Ninth Grade Students

A five-day discovery-based summer workshop for incoming ninth graders was designed and conducted at the University of Cincinnati (UC). The idea was to have an inquiry-based, research-driven laboratory experience where students were provided with a mentor who encouraged creativity and inquisitiveness. Over a period of three years, 33 students participated in this UC workshop. The students performed a series of experiments and toured and utilized the analytical instrumentation facilities at UC. During the first year, the goal of the workshop was to have the students design their own chemical sensor for anions in water. In subsequent years, the students were given the opportunity to investigate a research question arising from any of the experiments they performed throughout the week. Students were not given explicit instructions for activities. For example, a typical question could have been “Which anion shows luminescence?”, but they were not told how to discover this. On the last two days the students were tasked with proposing a question they wished to have answered and developed an experiment to test the hypothesis. At the conclusion of the workshop, each group or individual student presented their results and showed confidence in their work.

The Chemistry Outreach Program (ChOP) of Virginia Tech was a university-based outreach program that addressed the needs of high school chemistry classes in underfunded rural and inner-city school districts. The primary features of ChOP were a mobile chemistry laboratory (MCL), a shipping-based outreach program (ChemKits), and teacher workshops. ChOP targeted schools that lacked basic chemistry equipment and resources, as well as schools where science teachers had limited training in chemistry. The MCL, a fully equipped chemistry laboratory in a 78-foot-long tractor–trailer, visited high school chemistry classes on a regularly scheduled basis. From 2000 to 2004, the MCL served 38 high schools in which 9100 students performed 36,200 experiments. ChemKits, working in concert with the MCL, resulted in an additional 23,450 experiments conducted by students in 33 high schools from 2002 to 2004 and 17 high schools in 2004 to 2005. Teachers attended ChOP workshops in the summer prior to using the MCL or ChemKits in their classrooms. As a result of the collaboration between ChOP and high schools, participating chemistry classes posted an average 37-point gain in their pass rate on standardized state exams in chemistry over a three-year period.
